Description

At Northland, we're enablers of change, united by our journey to transform the energy sector into the foundation for a sustainable future.

Since our inception, we've been early movers in the energy industry, adopting new initiatives that pave the way for communities across the globe and helping forge their path towards a carbon-neutral landscape.

We're a different kind of independent power producer.

As developers, owners and operators who are at the forefront of the energy transition, we're uniquely positioned to leave a lasting impact in the regions where we operate.

We've expanded our business across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia to become a global leader, all by bringing together industry experts to find solutions with an entrepreneurial mindset.

While our work powers communities across the globe, Northland is powered by our people.

What You'll Do:

As an Energy Originator you will be responsible for supporting the origination and negotiation of electricity offtake contracts for all new development projects and existing power plants in Canada, the United States, and other regions as required.

Reporting to the Director, Energy Origination, you will play a key role by developing suitable offtakes strategies and providing recommendations for managing commodity risk.

As part of our dynamic global team, you will work closely with various teams, including Valuation and Analytics, Regional Development Offices, Construction/Engineering, Asset Management, and Operations on setting strategic direction and analyzing competitive issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a strategy for the sourcing of new offtake arrangements for our inhouse development pipeline and evaluate offtake strategies of M&A targets.

  • Source, build, and maintain relationships with potential offtake customers, including corporates, retail aggregators, utilities, municipalities, electric coops, and commodity trading firms and banks.
  • Review and evaluate requests for bids (RFPs/RFIs) within the region and work with the team to respond with proposals, pricing, term sheets, issues lists, redlined definitive documents, etc. sufficient to engage the end user and start the negotiation process. Secure all other relevant revenue streams for projects, including RECs, capacity, and ancillary services.
  • Research and maintain knowledge of emerging contract structures, ISO/RTO rules, power market fundamentals, and competitive intelligence on offtake pricing.
  • Assist in natural gas procurement/scheduling in coordination with the Commercial Asset Management team.
  • Support budgeting/longterm plan functions for operating facilities.
Commercial Activities

  • Liaise with development for offtake strategies and contract origination. Provide signoff related to market inputs to offtake structures, financial hedging, and related merchant assumptions for new and existing development projects in Canada and the US.
  • Support with contract customer relationship management as well as external relationships with marketers and prospects for the execution of offtake or hedge contracts.
  • Work with Operations and Commercial Asset Management to evaluate market exposures of longterm contracts or expiring contracts.
  • Collaborate on the negotiation of marketing agreements for regional marketing and transaction support.
