The Futility Of It All

The Futility Of It All

There’s an hour or so in the morning when I am starting to wake up and my mind starts transgressing from dream state to reality. This is when  things are very clear.

This morning was one of those days when the clarity was like a slap in the face. This morning I realized that no matter how hard I try, no matter how many posts and memes I create, how many readers I get, whatever,  I am either only singing to the choir or butting up against the intractable mindsets of the people who disagree with me.

It got me wondering about the nature of influence, and whether in this day and age of polarization, it actually exists anymore.  Do we really influence each other, do we change minds, do we enlighten anyone? Or does all the stuff we put out there simple blow around in the ether until  it disappears from sight and mind?

Can I make you believe that you should be vaccinated against a virus that will make you a spreader it or make you very sick and even could kill you, once you have made up your mind that the whole thing is just some sort of elaborate scheme to enslave you somehow?

Can I convince you that the that climate change is already real and manifesting itself all over the world if you think it’s a hoax, and that all of these incidents are merely part of the way weather normally works?

I no longer believe that I can because, from what I have experienced,  people are dug into belief trenches so deep that they couldn’t climb out even if they wanted to.

This is the dry rotting slow death of the human race in its early stages. And there is really nothing anyone can do about it, when so many people have become fastened to their positions, making universal agreement on anything impossible, which is really how change will come about these days.

I still have a few good years left on this planet. And I can no longer see wasting any more time on trying to change people’s minds. I will not stop poking the beast, however, but I will pick my opportunities more carefully, and just for self-gratification.  But mostly I will just carry on posting about the things I love, my family, my work, my creative life and my therapy.

I’m sad to leave these arenas behind. It was, at the very least, a lot of fun and good intellectual exercise. But all things must pass. And I really can’t see myself continuing to be part of the futility of it all.

I see what you mean, Jim. Back in grade school, there was some kid that wanted to convince others that two plus two is five. He was disappointed too as he made very little headway…

Further to below, “At the start of every disaster movie is a scientist being ignored.” Surely we, the bloggers and commentators, have the responsibility of editing the script and hence influencing the outcome of the movie?

I don't see that trying to convince the misguided to see and accept the overwhelming evidence that climate change is man-made is futile, Jim. Granted there are some who are only looking for someone to substantiate why they should not worry and need do nothing, so they can avoid change at all costs, but there are the more discerning readers and enquirers who, I believe, only need pointing in the direction of the more credible and prolonged substantial evidence.  We won't sway the man in the street who relies on ‘pub test’ discussion and the punters of procrastination and comfort zone diehardness for his decision making, but those who are open to their own fact finding and verification are the ones who are likely to be swayed.  The latter are the ones who have been confused by those out there who purposely perpetrate false interpretation and misrepresentation of the facts, and who have been misled by opinion dressed as facts. I suggest perhaps pointing your readers to life long advocates for diversity in our planet such as David Attenborough, and to the Reuters Hot List of the most influential climate scientists who have dedicated their lives to advocating for change.  You'll find them at this link: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/section/climate-change-scientists/

Our political leaders may be heavily swayed by their petroleum, coal and gas industrial lobbyists and financial supporters, but they are also reliant on the masses to vote them into power. As long as there's logical argument supported by well presented factual data, then I believe there is hope for the future in many countries.

The last day before school starts ... a familiar and comfortable sensation.

We always have these conversations no matter how many decades have gone by or where we find ourselves; it seems Labour Day encourages them. They are the conversations and memories of the last day before school starts, and although not technically the last day of summer, those mem ...
