Five lessons about the way we treat people Lesson 3
In a time when an ice cream sundae was more affordable, a 10-year-old boy went into a hotel's coffee shop and took a seat at a table. A waitress placed a glass of water in front of him."How much is an ice cream sundae?" the boy asked. "50 cents," the waitress replied. The little boy inspected the coins in his hand."What's the cost of a plain dish of ice cream?" he asked. The waitress was getting annoyed as more customers were waiting for a table. "35 cents," she replied. The little boy once again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress returned, she was surprised to see that the boy had left a tip. Two nickels and five pennies were placed neatly beside the empty dish. You see, he couldn't order the sundae because he needed to save enough to leave a tip.
In this story, the young boy showed respect and consideration for the waitress by leaving a tip, even though he couldn't afford the more expensive ice cream sundae. This shows the importance of being mindful of others and the impact of small acts of kindness.
