    African Nova Scotian Community Action Planning Intern

    Our Internship program offers paid 18-month internships for new grads interested in a career in municipal public service. The program provides training, development, and on-the-job experience for candidates that have graduated within the last 24 months.

    We are inviting applications for the Up to 18-month term position of African Nova Scotian Community Action Intern in Planning and Development .This is a bargaining unit position; external candidates will be considered if there are no qualified NSGEU 222 candidates.

    The Intern Program is designed to provide experiential learning and maximum professional exposure to interns in their chosen field of study while exploring the benefits of working for the municipality. Over the course of the internship, candidates will learn about government policy, operations, administration, services, and planning in a collaborative and supportive environment. Interns make a difference in our community and organization

    This position will be designated with the intent to hire a individual from those who self-identify as African Nova Scotians or of African Descent . Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on their electronic application.

    Working with the Planning and Development Department's African Nova Scotian Community Action Program, which forms part of the Regional & Community Planning Division, this position will support African Nova Scotian communities in the creation and implementation of Community Planning Strategies and Action Plans.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the creation and implementation of Community Planning Strategies and Action Plans for African Nova Scotian communities aligned with the Road to Economic Prosperity for African Nova Scotian Communities, the Cultural & Heritage Priorities Plan and the Anti-Black Racism Strategy
  • Performs entry-level professional work and provides technical assistance and information to staff and the public regarding the administration of planning and development programs
  • Supports and may prepare detailed reports and recommendations on planning proposals to Boards, Committees and Council
  • Conducts field evaluations and assessments
  • Represents the business unit or the municipality as a team member, or independently, on assigned planning matters
  • Supports and may facilitate community engagement processes as required
  • Researches, analyzes, and compiles information on a variety of planning matters as directed
  • Supports the development of policy options, analysis and reports on planning issues and participates as a team member for multidisciplinary projects
  • Conducts work directly in African Nova Scotian Communities and participates regularly in community-based events and research
  • Undertakes best-practice research and program support for Afrocentric community economic development and design practices
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    Education and Experience:

  • University degree or Diploma from an accredited planning program and/or a university degree from a non-accredited but related program (such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban, Human or Economic Geography, and Geographic/Spatial Information Systems, Social Sciences, Political Science, Social Anthropology and related fields)
  • Volunteer experience with community groups, not-for-profit organizations or social enterprises that support community development is considered an asset.
  • To be eligible for the internship, candidates must have graduated within the last 24 months or be confirmed to graduate in June 2024 from a recognized or legally authorized university or community college.
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada at time of application and maintain this status for the duration of 18-month term.
  • We value non-traditional experience and candidates are encouraged to outline in their application any student leadership, volunteering, extra-curricular, or community-based experience they possess.
  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated an interest in public policy or government administration
  • Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning
  • Knowledge of the Municipal Government Act, the HRM Charter, the Heritage Property Act, the Heritage By-law, the Subdivision By-law, various HRM Municipal Planning Strategies and Land Use By-laws
  • Understanding of the cultural diversity among African Nova Scotians and people of African descent within the Halifax Regional Municipality and in Canada;
  • Knowledge of culturally appropriate ways of working with local African Nova Scotians and African descent communities, as well as principles of equity, diversity and inclusion, anti-racism, power and privilege, accessibility, and/or human rights work
  • Knowledge of standard office software and technology including Microsoft Office Suite, Internet applications, GIS and other similar systems and technology
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal and facilitation skills

    Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion

    WORK STATUS: Full Time - Temporary 18 months

    HOURS OF WORK: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 35 hours per week however flex options to work outside of these hours under a hybrid work model may be available. On occasion, it may be necessary to work in the evenings and on weekends to support African Nova Scotian community gatherings.

    SALARY: $50,000 per year
