    Human Resources Advisor - Burlington, Canada - Centre for Skills Development

    Located at the head of Lake Ontario and within the municipalities of Burlington and Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the nation's earliest nature sanctuaries. Comprising some 2700 acres of protected wetlands, botanical collections, parkland and display gardens, and within easy access of millions of nature-starved urban citizens, RBG dedicates its expertise in horticulture, conservation, science and education to connect people, plants and place for the purpose of nurturing and preserving healthy growing life on our planet.

    The position works under the general direction of the Manager Human Resources, the mandate of the RBG and within human resources guidelines and directives, collective agreements, corporate initiatives and relevant legislative authorities.

    Roles and Responsibilities:

    • Provides consultation, expertise and advice to RBG managers and staff in all areas of human resources including, but not limited to recruitment, labour relations and on boarding.
    • Provides support, advice and guidance to managers on a wide range of staffing issues including but not limited to staffing, retention, dismissal, classification, training, professional development and performance management while ensuring compliance with and adherence to all relevant legislation, regulations, collective agreements, policies, directives and guidelines.
    • Development and implementation of the full-time, part-time and student staffing programs, draft job descriptions, job ads, interview questions and participates in the selection process and prepares job offers.
    • Leads the development and implementation of onboarding programs for all new employees (full-time, part-time and student).
    • Plans, coordinates, implements and monitors RBG's human resource programs and initiatives to ensure consistent implementation and management across RBG including succession planning, performance management, pay for performance system and recognition program.
    • Develops and designs compensation packages and policies and conducts regular compensation comparisons and prepares summary reports for the CEO.
    • Provides support to the health and safety committee by participating in monthly inspections, attending bi-monthly meetings, taking and distributing minutes.

    Qualifications:

    • Demonstrated and proven experience in the application of human resource management theories, techniques and principles in a unionized environment in all areas of human resources including recruitment, job descriptions, compensation administration and labour/staff relations to provide advice, expertise and consultation on a full range of human resources related programs and services and leadership of its student recruitment.
    • Knowledge of and demonstrated and proven experience in interpreting and applying human resource policies, directives and guidelines, collective agreements, relevant employment related provincial legislation.
    • Established knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety, Ontario Human Rights Code, WSIB and the Employment Standards Act. Demonstrated experience in labour relations environment to support and coach directors/managers to resolve issues informally before they become formal grievances; advise line managers on solutions to settle workplace disputes and provide support and guidance to resolve a grievance, when filed.
    • Ability to analyze complex problems and make strategic recommendations on effective resolutions.
    • Project planning and time management skills to lead a variety of project initiatives in support of human resources programs.

    Working Conditions:

    • Position is required to work both indoors and outdoors. Ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.
    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
