    Under the direction of the Manager, Cancer Prevention, the Tobacco Cessation Senior Specialist will support the service delivery and promotion of Talk Tobacco services in British Columbia.

    This project will serve First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and urban Indigenous peoples and will be implemented in partnership with the First Nations Health Authority.

    The aim of Talk Tobacco is to reduce commercial tobacco use among Indigenous populations.

    The Tobacco Cessation Senior Specialist will work in partnership with the First Nations Health Authority to support the delivery and promotion of culturally appropriate commercial tobacco cessation telephone and online services for Indigenous populations.

    When we speak of reducing tobacco use, we are referring to the use of commercial tobacco. We recognize and respect that Traditional tobacco is different from commercial tobacco.

    This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) contract position for one-year with a possibility of extension and can be based anywhere in British Columbia.

    provide counselling and support to Indigenous clients in the process of quitting or reducing smoking and/or vaping by telephone, text, and live chat.

    promote awareness of services and develop referral partnerships with relevant health and social service providers serving Indigenous people (25.Calls to Action that calls for the establishment of measurable goals to identify and close the gaps in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in consultation with Indigenous peoples, and will be grounded in the rights of Indigenous peoples to live in dignity, and maintain and strengthen their own cultures and traditions as outlined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

    Provides counselling, in a culturally relatable and supportive manner, integrating with the principles of Motivational Interviewing, to Indigenous people in the process of quitting smoking (commercial tobacco) and vaping by telephone, live chat and text.

    Provides referral suggestions for individuals who require other information or community resources regarding smoking and vaping cessation.
    Moderates an online discussion forum.
    Follows established protocols for service delivery and data entry.
    Works with confidential issues and client data.

    Leads partnership development and maintains strong partner relationships ensuring ongoing communication and the development of referral relationships with health care and social service providers.

    Works closely with Talk Tobacco Senior Specialists in other provinces/territories to share best practices, learning and continual program improvement.

    Works in compliance with the provisions of The Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations and complies with the Society's Health & Safety Policy.

    Actively contribute to our culture of justice, belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion by ensuring that all staff feel represented and heard regardless of their gender, age, religion, ethnicity, and nationality or race.

    Related post-secondary education in the field of health promotion, health sciences, community development or social work and/or a combination of two to three years education and experience in similar positions.

    Strong counseling skills and knowledge of behaviour change theory with regards to commercial tobacco.

    Proven project coordination, collaboration, and organizational skills, with experience supporting projects through all facets of the project life cycle.

    Demonstrated knowledge of health promotion approaches and strategies related to commercial tobacco control is an asset.
    Excellent telephone and customer service skills.
    Able to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally.
    High level of computer skills, experience working with databases and keyboarding skills.
    Proficient in MSOffice (Word/Excel/PowerPoint)
    Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
