- Support departments and program areas to develop new, and revise existing guidelines, policies and procedures to identify existing barriers to human rights and equity, gaps, and opportunities to protect and promote human rights
- Develop and deliver professional development in human rights to build capacity within the School Board to ensure compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Code
- Consult with and advise senior administration, system leaders, and school administrators in relation to human rights risks, issues, initiatives and projects
- Support the ongoing development, revision and implementation of the Board's human rights policy and complaint process for students, families and staff, as part of the Human Rights and Equity Office
- Support and advise senior administration, system leaders, and school administration in responding to and resolving human rights concerns raised by students, families and employees
- Chair the Equity and Inclusive Education Policy Review Committee
- Support human rights-focused projects and initiatives undertaken by the Human Rights and Equity Office, system portfolios (e.g., Special Education), and senior administration as requested; identifies projects and initiatives of priority to the system
- Coordinate the Accessibility Working Group in developing and implementing multi-year Accessibility Plans
- Receive and respond to concerns from school community members regarding accessibility issues and service accommodation requests
- Responsible for reporting board compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) to the provincial government
- Conduct intakes, develop/draft investigative plans for human rights-related complaints, gather evidence, interview and report writing
- Engage in restorative practices and culturally responsive dispute resolution strategies and approaches QUALITIES/SKILLS/SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE:
- Extensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is required
- Comprehensive understanding of the Anti-Racism Act, Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, Education Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act (as it relates to Code-based harassment) is preferred
- Proven ability to facilitate, negotiate and employ other alternate dispute resolution techniques
- Have an understanding, gained through lived experience and/or professional experience, of anti-colonial, anti-racist and anti-oppression principles and practices
- Ability to work within unionized and non-unionized employee groups
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to research and identify reliable sources of information
- Acute ability to resolve disputes and maintain steady composure
- Proficient in computer systems such as Outlook 365, MS Office Suite, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with effective communication skills, both orally and in writing
- Ability to work both independently and part of a team
- Class G driver's license and access to a personal vehicle is required
- Ability to receive regular feedback and incorporate it into current projects
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Proven ability to work under pressure in order to meet frequent deadlines EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE :
- Completion of a University Degree in law, human rights or equity related discipline
- A minimum of five (5) years of related work experience is required
- Experience in a large public sector organization is preferred
- An equivalent combination of education and experience, including lived experience may be considered First consideration will be given to permanent members of The Association of Administrative, Professional and Support Personnel (AAPSP).

Description
POSITION SUMMARY
:The Human Rights Policy Advisor will have extensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code. They will provide advice and guidance in the creation and review of school board policies and procedure to ensure they align with the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Education Act and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The Human Rights Policy Advisor will support the promotion and protection of human rights within the TVDSB through receiving, processing, analyzing, investigating, and participating in the early resolution of human rights-related concerns or complaints; analyzing policies, procedures and practices through an Indigenous rights, human rights and equity lens; and conducting human rights-based research. The Human Rights Policy Advisor will engage with students, families, community and staff on human rights-related matters, provide mentoring and support to employees, and develop and deliver human rights-based training and professional development. The Human Rights Policy Advisor will identify, analyze and report on potential systemic human rights and equity issues.
