    Safety Codes Officer, Building (Plans Examiner/Inspector) role involves ensuring compliance with the Safety Codes Act through plan examination, inspection, investigation, and enforcement. As a Safety Codes Officer, you will offer guidance to property owners, contractors, and professionals on structures and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems to meet relevant codes and standards. Key responsibilities include:

    • Reviewing plans, issuing building permits, and inspecting construction and mechanical systems for compliance with codes, standards, and bylaws.
    • Notifying designers, contractors, and homeowners of non-compliance in design or construction through permit conditions and notices.
    • Following up on inspections and conditions to ensure resolution of non-compliance issues.
    • Investigating non-permit complaints and taking necessary actions, including preparing reports and files for prosecution.
    • Attending Safety Codes Council hearings and providing evidence on behalf of The City of Calgary.

    Qualifications:

    • The ideal candidate should hold one of the following combinations of education and experience:
    • Journeyman Carpenter, Plumber, Electrician, Sheet Metal Worker, or Bricklayer Certification recognized by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board with a minimum of 5 years of relevant post-certification experience in the building construction sector.
    • A 2-year technology diploma in a related field paired with at least 5 years of post-diploma experience in building construction.
    • An Engineering or Architecture degree with at least 5 years of relevant building construction experience, one of which should be post-degree completion.
    • Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver's License (or equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no pending suspensions or charges, or a valid Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits and no pending suspensions or charges.
    • Ability to acquire a City of Calgary operator's permit within 6 weeks of offer acceptance.
    • Safety Codes Officer Certifications for Building Part 3 and Part 9 are beneficial.
    • Prior experience with Safety Codes Officer Part 9 and Residential HVAC certification is preferred.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, solid judgment and decision-making abilities.
    • Capability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
    • Willingness to work beyond regular hours to address urgent safety concerns.
