    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Position focus

    Under the supervision of the Principal and in collaboration with the Teacher-Librarian, the Library Technician is responsible for the continuous daily management of the library and maintenance of library resources to ensure that maximum use may be made of the facility by students and staff. The Library Technician performs a variety of complex, detailed, technical support duties within the school library. These skills require an understanding of established and emerging international library standards, procedures, and the use of specific library tools.

    Primary Duties & Responsibilities

    A. Instructional Support Services

    A1. Provides bibliographic instruction to individual students and staff to locate reference sources and instructional materials, both hard copy and on-line resources.

    A2. Assists students in developing independent habits to locate reference materials and to develop skills in the use of reference materials, both hard copy and on-line sources.

    A3. Instructs staff and students in the proper use of instructional equipment and software in collaboration with the Teacher-Librarian.

    A4. Collaborates with the Teacher-Librarian in selecting requested resources for students and teachers.

    A5. Provides Readers' Advisory services for both students and staff using such techniques as reading aloud and book talking.

    A6. Prepares bibliographies to support teaching and learning.

    A7. Collaborates with the Teacher-Librarian in the production and exhibition of presentations.

    A8. Collaborates with the Teacher Librarian to inform staff and students of current copyright legislation.

    B. Acquisitions/Budgeting

    B1. Maintains request and consideration files, checking requests against holdings.

    B2. Collaborates with the Teacher-Librarian in the selection of resources to purchase for staff and student use.

    B3. Prepares purchase orders and keeps records of ordering and receiving transactions as delegated.

    B4. Receives new materials, verifies against purchase orders and packing slips, forwards appropriate forms to Accounts Payable, and follows up on any problems by corresponding with suppliers.

    B5. Maintains accurate budget records of library-related monies spent as delegated.

    C. Collection Development and Maintenance

    C1. Processes all new library resources for shelving and circulation.

    C2. Catalogues resources, original or copy cataloguing, using current and emerging international library standards.

    C3. Adapts present cataloguing to comply with current Dewey and Sears Subject Heading requirements.

    C4. Ensures the library resources are properly maintained and repaired.

    C5. Assists in weeding the collection.

    C6. Performs the inventory of library resources at least once every two years, the reconciliation of missing materials, and the compilation of library statistics in collaboration with the Teacher-Librarian.

    D. Technology Services

    D1. Assists staff and students in the technical troubleshooting of minor hardware and instructional software problems.

    D2. Makes arrangements to have equipment repaired using PTSD online work orders.

    D3. Collaborates with the Teacher-Librarian in the inventory of instructional technology associated with the library.

    D4. Arranges for and tracks all laminating requests for the school.

    E. Library Promotion and Circulation

    E1. Operates the circulation system and keeps complete circulation files.

    E2. Shelves and maintains library collection using the Dewey Decimal system.

    E3. Facilitates the exchange of resource materials with other schools in the division and the Department of Education.

    E4. Manages the circulation of technology for staff and student use.

    E5. Collaborates with the Teacher-Librarian in keeping staff informed of new acquisitions by the school library.

    E6. Collaborates with the Teacher-Librarian in the design and production of posters, signs, bulletin boards, etc. and the display of new materials.

    F. Clerical

    F1. In collaboration with the Teacher Librarian, prepares relevant library schedules including circulation and audio visual schedules.

    F2. Maintains the library database, correspondence files, suppliers' catalogues, large picture files, and curriculum guides as required.

    F3. Issues and resets student computer log-in passwords and maintains, updates password file as delegated.

    F4. Creates and distributes overdue notices on a regular basis. Follows-up on the retrieval of overdue resources and the collection of loss or damage fees.

    G. General Duties

    G1. Monitors the activities of students using the library.

    G2. Coordinates the library activities of parent volunteers and student helpers.

    G3. Performs other library related tasks as may be assigned by the Principal.
