    Mechanic, Fleet Procurement - Toronto, Canada - Greater Toronto Airports Authority

    Description

    Position Summary:

    Reporting to the Manager, Fleet this position repairs, maintains fixed and towed ground support equipment, including snow removal and mechanized sweeping equipment and all other GTAA vehicles.

    Key Accountabilities:

  • Repairs/maintains engines, component parts and attachments to mobile, fixed and towed ground support equipment, including snow removal and mechanized sweeping equipment, CFR equipment, motor vehicles, diesel tractors, compressors, diesel, gasoline and gas turbine-powered (stand-by) power units by overhauling of carburetors and similar components requiring knowledge with computerized fuel injection systems
  • Engine tune-ups and problem diagnosis by using various electronic instrumentation systems
  • Inspecting, adjusting, repairing and/or replacing all major and minor vehicle and equipment components, transmissions, brakes hydraulics and electrical systems
  • Rectifying problems on vehicles and equipment, which have suffered failures of major or minor components or entire systems
  • Disassembling complete units, when required, and rebuilding, incorporating new, repaired or replacement components, frequently fabricating own parts where time or availability is at a minimum
  • Overhauling components (which may have been previously removed) such as engines, transmissions, etc. Modifying older equipment to accept new components such as transmissions and engines to replace those components no longer available and thus extend the life of the equipment
  • Checking and repairing brakes, repairing or replacing brake drums, linings or disc pads, wheel and master cylinders, power assist and brake lines, wheel bearings and seals and repacks
  • Diagnosing and repairing components relating to electronic – antilock brakes (e.g. sensors, actuators and computerized control devices)
  • Inspecting and repairing all steering components, shock absorbers, springs, torsion bars and visually checking alignment by observing if there is abnormal tire wear
  • Inspecting, repairing and adjusting all components of electrical systems, starters, alternators, lights, wipers, etc. and including electronic ignitions, electronic governor and carburetor controls
  • Performing major and minor maintenance and repair work and replacement of units or components to all emergency power units, works in co-operation with Airfield Electricians in the maintenance of these emergency units
  • Diagnosing problems with air conditioning units and doing complete repairs including evacuating and recharging the entire system
  • Preparing propane powered vehicles including replacing filters and testing all connections and lines for leakage and damage
  • Repairing and servicing hydrostatic systems and modifying same to minimize the chance of hydraulic failure on the airfield
  • Repairing and modifying Emergency crash vehicles equipped with electronic computerized transmissions, computerized turret and foam regulators, computerized inflation/deflation mechanisms on tires, electronic computerized fuel systems and sensors as well as Planetary gear reduction systems
  • Inspects and carries out preventive maintenance on ground support and emergency power units by:
  • Performing preventive maintenance inspections on a variety of Airport vehicles and equipment. Performing general servicing including oil changes, filters, lubrications, safety equipment inspections, tires, batteries, wipers, lights, glass, etc. Cleaning, degreasing vehicles and equipment
  • Carrying out preventive maintenance inspections on all emergency power units installed on the airport
  • Inspects, repairs and certifies, all dump trucks, trailers and other similar equipment rewiring semi-annual inspections, twice annually for safety certification to meet Ministry of Transportation Safety Standards and Regulations in order to allow vehicles to operate on the highway
  • Organizing and accounting for a complete inventory of allocated hand tools. Requests replacement of lost or damaged tools to keep an up to date functional inventory;
  • Uses various manufacturer's manuals and specifications from a large on-site library, to ensure repairs and adjustments are completed to precise standards
  • Performing electric and gas welding and cutting
  • Recording accurately all pertinent data for each job on the assigned work order (e.g. hours, current vehicle mileage, what the job entailed, materials, etc.)
  • Performing preventative maintenance, repairs and inspections on groundside transit style busses as required
  • This unionized position is classified at the Band 8 level, with an hourly wage of $ based on a 40 hour work week. The successful candidate must be available to commence the duties of the position once a selection decision has been made. A test may be administered as a part of the competitive process. An eligibility list may be created.

    Qualifications:

  • Candidates must possess a Valid Ontario Truck and Coach Technician Certification (310T)
  • Heavy Equipment (421A) is an asset
  • Emergency vehicle technician (EVT) trained or certified would be an asset
  • Experience working on Fire and Emergency equipment would be an asset
  • Candidates must possess a valid Class D Ontario driver's license
  • Demonstrated experience working in a customer centric environment
  • Able to obtain and retain Transportation Security Clearance at the designated level for the position
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of automotive and allied engineering technology associated with the design, inspection, testing and use of light vehicles and heavy equipment to meet the requirements of the Airports Authority Group and the maintenance and repairs thereto
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current Ministry of Transportation regulations and practices
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current technology of a very diversified fleet of light and heavy technologically advanced equipment
  • Must keep current with the advancing technology of electronically controlled equipment
  • Knowledge of computer diagnostics and programming tools to perform troubleshooting and maintenance duties due to the increasing use of computer controlled equipment
  • Knowledge of proper response to hazardous spills and containment
  • Knowledge of record keeping practices
  • Knowledge of maintenance of tools during work
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices
