Under the general direction of the Foreman or Lead Hand of Winnipeg Fleet Management Agency (WFMA), the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician is responsible for the mechanical inspection, maintenance and repair of the related equipment and vehicles that is being repaired in one of the Winnipeg Fleet Management Agencies' repair facilities.


As the
_Heavy Duty Technician_
you will:

  • Perform scheduled vehicle preventative maintenance, repairs and safety inspections.
  • Perform vehicle and equipment inspections and reports.
  • Maintain an established level of shop safety practices as per established Provincial Safety Standards.
  • Perform installation of addition equipment and accessories and fabrication.

Your education and qualifications include:


  • Valid Manitoba Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic and/or Truck and Transport Mechanic certificate.
  • Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Certificate is preferred.
  • Manitoba Ozone Protection Industry Association (MOPIA) Certification is preferred.
  • A minimum five (5) years' current experience adjusting, repairing and replacing parts and components on various heavy duty vehicles and equipment as a Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic and/or Truck and Transport Mechanic.
  • Experience performing preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and inspections of various heavyduty equipment and/or transport trucks.
  • Experience in Arc, Acetylene, and mig welding is preferred.
  • Experience in automotive air conditioning.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff members, members of other City departments and the general public.
  • Proficient at sourcing and retrieving maintenance information electronically and online.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions and regulations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision or direction.
  • Ability to take initiative and effectively plan, organize and prioritize work in a fastpaced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and complete accurate documentation/records.
  • Effective computer skills in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and ability to use Fleet maintenance software.

Conditions of employment:


  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
  • Possess and maintain valid Manitoba Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic or Truck and Transport Certificate.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Manitoba Class 3 driver's license with air brake endorsement.
  • Physically capable of performing the duties of this position with the ability to lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to provide own hand and air tools.
  • Ability to work day, evening, night shifts and weekends.
