Purpose
Reporting to the Manager of Infrastructure and Operations in Information Technology Services (ITS), the Systems Administrator - GIS is part of the ITS infrastructure team and will primarily provide systems-related and advanced systems support to the GIS lab and infrastructure. Services supported include GIS Lab, GIS Virtual Servers and Virtual Desktop administration, GIS server configuration, management, patching, identity and access management, fault monitoring, and incident resolution.

Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
•Installing, configuring, managing, and patching of Windows and Linux physical and virtual servers in a high availability enterprise environment. The GIS program has a mix of Linux and windows
OS's used for infrastructure and service delivery.
•Automating and orchestrating patching using modern scripting languages and tools;
•Managing a virtual desktop environment using Hyper-V;
•Monitoring systems, responding to alerts, and diagnosing and troubleshooting systems problems;
•Administering GIS specific applications including but not limited to ArcGIS, RStudio, Autodesk Civil 3D, QGIS, Python, GlobalMapper;
•Documenting configuration and system changes;
•Developing project plans with tasks and timelines for GIS systems projects including the GIS lab;
•Managing all server, lab, and storage assets using an asset management system;
•Providing direct support to faculty and instructors in the GIS program using the GIS lab and GIS infrastructure;
•Managing, auditing, and verifying backups for the GIS servers and systems; and
•Interacting with other ITS staff to perform advanced troubleshooting as required.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in Information Technology or a related discipline, together with a minimum of two years of directly related progressive experience with infrastructure administration. Possession of a minimum of one relevant certification would be an asset.
Professional development, education and skill relevancy development are an inherent part of the job. The successful candidate should demonstrate continual improvement of their skills.
Working knowledge of the following is desired:
•GIS applications and data workflows
•Linux/UNIX and Microsoft Windows in high availability virtual server environments
•Patch lifecycle and patch management systems and tools
•Computer hardware including CPU, RAM, Network, Disk
•Virtualization, containerization, or public cloud-based computing
Experience in the following is desired:
•Basic Networking, including VLANs, DNS, and DHCP
•Shell scripting in Windows (PowerShell) and Linux (Bash)
•Develop small programs / scripts to automate systems administration tasks
•Basic understanding of Identity and Access Management principles
•Basic understanding of Database concepts and user provisioning
The successful candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively with cross functional teams and possess strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are also essential to this position. The selected applicant will be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and possess excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to establish effective working relationships with a diverse set of clients, including senior technical staff, support staff, faculty members and students. The successful candidate is a self-starter with the ability to manage changing priorities, meet deadlines and deliver results.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Salary
The entry level of the plan commences at a Grade 9 ($68,177.20 to $70, and progresses through to a Grade 13 ($82,864.60 to $86, The starting salary will be dependent upon the successful applicant's qualifications and placement within the plan.

Normal hours of work will be 8:00am - 4:00pm, Monday through Friday; however, some flexibility is required, as generally system maintenance occurs during off-hours.
