    The Opportunity

    Position: Senior Engineer, Nuclear and Mechanical

    Employment Type: Permanent

    Employment Level: Senior

    Location: 393 University Avenue, Toronto

    Department: Design and Engineering Services

    Reports to: Manager, Advanced Reactor Design

    Hours per week: 37.5

    Kinectrics has a growing portfolio of services supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear power plants in Canada and around the world. This includes the advancement of CANDU design and other Advanced Reactor technology, as well as emerging technologies such as: nuclear fuel cycle facilities, heavy water production facilities, detritiation facilities and integrated modules to aid in the deployment of such technologies. Additionally, the market continues to grow for highly integrated clean energy technologies which use a nuclear reactor as a heat source such as high temperature hydrogen production cycles, process heating loads, desalination, synthetic fuels and materials production, district heating, etc.

    A newly formed section, Advanced Reactor Design, has been established to lead this exciting new area of growth for Kinectrics. This section is a design hub for Advanced Reactor, and New Build services within Kinectrics and works in a highly collaborative manner with all service lines of the company. This section will lead the reactor design services for Advanced Reactors & related technologies, which include system reactor core design, process/hydraulic design, advanced electrical, I&C design, and the associated application of related design codes & standards.

    • Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

  • Provide input and direction to the development of conceptual/detailed equipment designs as they progress through a structured design process
  • Provide technical oversight and mentoring of more junior members of the Engineering team
  • Perform Mechanical engineering analysis and/or reactor core design and analysis
  • Interface with construction/procurement partners and utility stakeholders, throughout the lifecycle of the design project (i.e., from preliminary and conceptual engineering to detailed design, implementation and close-out) to provide practical and effective solutions as per requirements.
  • Understand and assess client problems and determine appropriate means of solution.
  • Interface effectively with other staff on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Stay current with developments within their field of expertise.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    • What You Need to Succeed

  • Mechanical or Nuclear engineering activities including: Piping and process systems design, including preparation of system design specification, flow diagrams, piping isometric drawings. Preparation of equipment and components sizing calculations, technical specifications, and design drawings. Design of modular engineered systems including skid-type systems and components Vendor-interface and preparation of equipment & component specifications to facilitate procurement including selection of nuclear (Class 1/2/3) and conventional (Class 6) valves, flanges, fittings, pumps and heat exchangers. Design assistance with technical evaluations, independent third-party reviews, design walkdowns, system hydraulic calculations, component sizing calculations and HVAC flow balance calculations.
  • Experience with Nuclear safety & licensing experience would be considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards including but not limited to CSA N285, ASME Section III, Section VIII and/or B31.1, ASME Section III Appendix XXIII qualification is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the use of piping and analysis software such as CAESAR II, AutoPipe, PipeStress is an asset.
  • Assist in development of proposals and negotiation of contracts with clients
  • Working knowledge of Nuclear Quality Assurance Standards such as N299 and CSA N286.
  • A Bachelor's or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering (or equivalent) is required.
  • Candidates are expected to have or to pursue attainment of the P.Eng. designation.
  • Good time management skills and demonstrated capability to interface effectively with and gain the trust of station customers.
  • Effective project management skills are an asset
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements in other countries is an asset.
  • A period of 8+ years relevant experience is considered necessary.
