    Job Description Summary


    The Coordinator, Physical Activity, is responsible for effectively implementing UBC s commitment to increase physical activity levels and reduce sedentary behaviour across campus.

    This work is guided by the Okanagan Charter for Health Promoting Universities, UBC s Wellbeing Strategic Framework and the Recreation at UBC Plan.

    Working with interdisciplinary colleagues from across campus, the incumbent will develop programming to deliver, and strengthen partnerships to promote physical activity and increase awareness of its benefits.

    The incumbent will also support and implement initiatives to increase awareness, reduce barriers, increase accessibility, and enhance knowledge translation of physical activity research.


    Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC student experience.

    The A&R Department has a team of approximately 100 employees, and is led by a strong cross-unit management team.

    It services over 20,000 students through recreational programming, 24 varsity teams, 13 competitive clubs (from Sept 2015), along with thousands of members of the UBC community.

    Organizational Status


    The Coordinator, Physical Activity reports to the Director, Intramurals and Recreation as part of the UBC Recreation Team and works collaboratively with members of the UBC Wellbeing Secretariat and Strategic Support Team on projects designed to achieve a healthier campus.

    Their work is delivered through the Office of Physical Activity.

    This position also works with Athletics and Recreation programmers and marketing staff, VPS portfolio staff, and external partners and agencies.

    Athletics & Recreation is a division within the VP Students Portfolio with responsibility for shaping the student experience and learning environment.

    UBC Wellbeing is a collaborative effort to make the University a better place to live, work and learn through a systems-wide approach to promoting health and wellbeing across our campuses.

    Work Performed


    PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OFFICE

    • Responsible for the supervision, assessment, implementation and administration of Physical Activity programs, such as MoveUBC, Thrive and Nutrition Month, and policies.
    • Informed by the Okanagan Charter for Health Promotion Universities and Colleges, responsible for: developing and delivering programs, enhancing education around increasing physical activity levels through campaigns, and decreasing sedentary behaviour.
    • Delivers year round, low barrier physical activity programs and initiatives targeting UBC students, staff and faculty, alumni and the University Neighbourhood Association, including campus walking programs, activity breaks and classroom physical activity interventions.
    • Evaluates Physical Activity programming targeting marginalized populations.
    • Implements the delivery of MoveUBC, a program designed to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour.
    • Implements physical activity initiatives designed to influence systemic change at the University and address the needs of a large and diverse student, staff, and faculty population.
    • Coordinates with collaborative programs and initiatives to embed physical activity in other UBC Wellbeing campaigns, such as Thrive and Nutrition Month
    • Works to translate research into practice by synthesizing current and emerging evidence. Acts proactively to seek out new opportunities and build capacity with academics/faculties for Living Lab projects
    • Participates on the UBC Wellbeing Community of Practice and the UBC Physical Activity Committee.
    • Assists in the collaboration with departments, faculties and student groups to develop sustainable health and wellbeing initiatives, including interventions that create a supportive campus environment.

    RECREATION DELIVERY AND INTEGRATION

    • Evaluates low barrier, physical activity Athletics and Recreation programs and initiatives.
    • Strategically implements inclusive initiatives in recreation to reduce barriers to programming, policies and spaces and create a community welcoming to all
    • Assists in ensuring measures are in place to guarantee a safe and risk free experience for program participants.
    • Assists in providing research based insight to the design, promotion and delivery of leading edge physical activity policies and programs, encouraging the development of new programs and activities which address the changing needs of the University community.
    • Collaborates with the Marketing and Communication team to enhance the delivery of physical activity oriented communications and program promotion utilizing a health promotions lens. Collaborates on content creation and messaging with a health promotions lens of targeted materials to promote physical activity including handouts, webpage and newsletter content, and presentation materials. Works with the Recreation Marketing Coordinator to disseminate physical activity opportunities and information.
    • Conducts research within the Recreation department related to benefits of physical activity as determined by Recreation Staff.
    • Recruits and manages students on the MoveU Crew Team which targets disrupting sitting around campus. Develops and leads ongoing training for all MoveU Crew Team members to ensure awareness of policies, practices and expectations.
    • Serves on campus and community committees where appropriate.
    • Effectively leads on program planning, execution and deliver as set by the Director, Intramurals and Recreation.
    • Assists with the oversight of the Physical Activity budget, finances, record keeping, and risk management.
    • Attends meetings and retreats as required.
    • Performs other duties as required.
    Consequence of Error/Judgement


    The Coordinator, Physical Activity helps coordinate the delivery of physical activity strategies that result in creating healthier environments for students, staff, faculty wellbeing.

    This position ensures that the initiatives succeed and meet a high level of excellence.

    Participant safety is of the utmost importance and the failure to ensure a safe environment resulting in injury poses a significant financial and reputational risk.

    Failure to complete the required duties of this job will result participant dissatisfaction, negative impacts on the health and wellbeing of the targeted populations and will ultimately negatively impact the ability of the University to deliver on its commitment to support wellbeing, personal development and outstanding campus life.

    The improper execution of details associated with the management of the initiative could result in a tarnished image of the university.

    Supervision Received

    The Coordinator, Physical Activity works autonomously within defined program constraints.

    Reporting to the Director, Intramurals and Recreation, this position receives guidance and direction, but the work is reviewed in terms of achievement of defined goals and execution of the defined responsibilities.

    The Coordinator, Physical Activity directly hires, disciplines, evaluates and terminates administrative student staff (specifically with student team Move U Crew).

    Each of the student staff members will be responsible for reporting into the Coordinator, Physical Activity.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
    Masters degree in Public Health or related disciplinary preferred.
    A minimum of 5 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Knowledge of university community health issues, outcome driven health promotion strategies, and population-based health education methods.

    Aligns with UBC s strategic plan vision and values including embodying principles of health promotion and wellbeing, sustainability, mutual respect and equity, advancing and sharing knowledge, and public interest.

    Demonstrated expertise in physical activity programming, adaptive physical activity, health education, partnership building, and equity and inclusion.
    Experience working with multiple stakeholders in a complex environment.
    Strong familiarity with conducting primary and secondary research.
    Supervisory experience, student development experience and valid CPR certification preferred.
    Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral and written communication skills that support consensus building.
    Ability to build and maintain positive relationships. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
