    OVERVIEW

    Vertex is currently seeking a full-time Manager – Reclamation and Remediation AB & SK to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing upstream oil and gas, industrial projects, downstream and midstream programs, and other programs/projects across Alberta and Saskatchewan that require assessment, contaminant mitigation, monitoring, and/or removal, and compliance reporting. The Manager will be responsible and accountable for liability management programs within their defined geographical region(s) in accordance with Vertex guidelines and providing technical mentorship and Project Management support to staff under your care and control.

    This role will focus on managing teams executing assessment and remediation as well as reclamation (liability management). Typical work scopes carried out by the teams include development of work plans and cost estimates, conducting assessment and remediation work, spill response and remediation, reclamation, site inspections, detailed site assessments and/or submission of reclamation certificate applications. The successful individual will play a critical role in the management and technical support of teams conducting liability management programs in a cost-effective and pragmatic manner that exceeds our client's expectations.

    CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or higher education related to environmental sciences, biology or other related discipline
  • Currently poses a professional designation applicable for conducting professional sign off in Alberta, sign off in British Columbia and/or Saskatchewan is considered an asset
  • Minimum 10 years in the environmental industry with execution experience as a well as management oversight of the following: Phase I and Phase II program executionRemediationManagement of complex contaminated sites (support SST /risk/Tier 2)Groundwater monitoringSpill responseDetailed Site AssessmentsReclamation Certificate ApplicationsVegetation management/reclamation site inspectionsPreparing reclamation closure reports for submission in Alberta and/or Saskatchewan
  • Project management experience – cost estimates, scheduling, budget tracking, client interactions and communications
  • Client management experience – contract negotiations, program oversight, conflict resolution, ongoing business development, and financial management at the program/district level
  • Experience in managing and developing a high-performing team and collaborating with Vertex leadership to grow the team to meet the business needs of Vertex and our clients
  • Experience in the upstream oil and gas industry
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of contaminated sites and reclamation regulations in Alberta and Saskatchewan, working knowledge of contaminated sites management in Ontario is considered an asset
  • Strong leadership/mentorship skills to support staff on all liability management work scopes as well as providing guidance on client and project management as required

  • ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

    Leadership & Personnel Management

  • Provide consistent leadership presence for all Liability Management staff under your supervision
  • Manage technical outcomes of the team in conjunction with support from the Risk Assessment team ( as needed)
  • Mentor and coach junior and intermediate environmental staff on all aspects of liability management projects to develop and grow teams and individual skill sets.
  • Evaluate current team needs with Senior Management to meet expected growth and Vertex initiatives
  • Drive continual development of staff to enhance and grow skill sets and support teams in meeting professional development goals
  • Work collaboratively with other Vertex Managers and Project Managers to effectively and safely schedule staff and resources to address client workloads
  • Active stewardship of Vertex and client safety programs is expected as well as supporting the teams in safety excellence for all projects and programs under your care and control
  • Client Management, Expectations, and Relationships

  • Maintain and build relationships with existing clients and work towards value added opportunities with existing clients
  • Explore, support, and foster new initiatives and opportunities to expand services to new clients
  • Accountable for performance of all Liability Management projects being managed and executed in Alberta (excluding NW Alberta) and Saskatchewan
  • Support and manage as required relationships with First Nations partners on projects and initiatives to meet partnership goals and Nation's directives
  • Advise clients regarding strategy and approach for project work and delivery of technical documents and communicate progress
  • Technical Requirements

  • Working knowledge – understand, remain current, and ability to interpret environmental regulations, guidelines, and standards as required by Vertex and client base
  • Expert knowledge in SST and Tier 1 and 2 applications in Alberta for upstream oil and gas applications
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of OneStop for management and application of documents required for upload
  • Ability to navigate regulatory requirements and provide design solutions, mitigation strategies, risk and opportunities, and anticipated timing to clients
  • Provide technical guidance to clients and staff in your areas of practice and seek advice of internal experts to address technical requirements as needed.
  • Facilitate internal coordination of Vertex technical expertise with project managers and staff under you care and control
  • Review and sign-off of technical reports in your area of practice
  • Drive improvements in process associated with work scopes and project activities under you care and control
  • Business Development

  • Develop and assist with the execution of marketing plans to explore new business opportunities, while managing current clients, to ensure profitability, increase market share, and growth and expansion of the Vertex Liability Management team
  • Collaborate with Other Senior staff and Senior Managers in developing systems, procedures, and tools to improve project outcomes and client experiences
  • Develop and review proposals and bid packages seeking new work and opportunities

  • LOCATION

    This position will be based out of Vertex's Sherwood Park office (161, 2055 Premier Way). A hybrid work schedule is available for this role.

    REPORTING STRUCTURE & KEY COLLABORATORS

    The position will provide leadership and mentorship to our existing Liability Management teams executing Alberta, and Saskatchewan programs and portfolios. It is expected that this senior role will oversee significant upstream oil and gas projects. With Vertex's diverse client base the following sectors will also fall within the regional portfolio for liability management and execution; downstream, and midstream oil and gas, industrial operations, mining, and manufacturing and processing.

    This position will report to VP – Environment (Sherwood Park). Key positions that this role will be collaborating on a regular basis include:

    Director of Technical Services

  • Provision of technical support as well as supporting the manager role to ensure the appropriate tools and processes are in place to execute all projects to meet client and Vertex standards
  • Discipline Leader and Toxicology

  • Technical support and guidance on company approach (stance) on risk assessment and complex projects. Erik will support the role as a key Subject Matter Expert on risk and toxicology
  • Manager Reclamation and Remediation NEBC and NW Alberta

  • Provision of project/program opportunities and staff to support project execution and cross utilization of field and reporting staff
  • Biophysical Manager

  • The Biophysical team will support the Liability Management team on any Biophysical aspects associated with projects/programs (i.e. water crossings, wildlife sweeps)
  • Manager of Regulatory

  • Management and oversight of all regulatory and compliance related projects and programs for Vertex (Canada Wide). This team will provide regulatory support and guidance associated with municipal, provincial, or federal jurisdictions to support program execution.
