    The University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for a full time or part time Veterinary Anesthesiologist in either the Teaching and Research stream or the Teaching focused stream. Full time applications are preferred. Depending on qualifications and career track expectations, the appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching and Research (tenure track), Assistant Professor, Teaching (tenure track), Associate Professor, Teaching and Research (with tenure) or Associate Professor, Teaching (with tenure).

    The successful candidate will be appointed in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The anticipated start date is May 1, 2024 or a mutually agreed upon date.

    Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent) and board certification (DACVAA and/or Dipl. ECVAA) is preferred but board eligible ACVAA or ECVAA residency trained candidates will be considered. An additional graduate degree is considered an asset. The candidate must be eligible for immediate licensure in the Province of Alberta.

    • Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) normally requires evidence or promise of teaching effectiveness or competency in teaching and learning, an awareness of how to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning practices, participation in reflective practice, and professional learning activities related to teaching and learning. Commitment to, or experience with, defining learning goals, supporting student learning activities and engagement, and creating assessment strategies may also be required. Engagement in the research and scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and curriculum design of the relevant discipline or field as well as engaging in other scholarly professional or creative activities that strengthens and informs the academic staff member's knowledge base and expertise is required.
    • Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor (Teaching) , in addition to the requirements for an Assistant Professor (Teaching), requires evidence of teaching effectiveness, a demonstrated ability to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning and student engagement, to design student learning experiences and assessment strategies grounded in a clearly articulated teaching philosophy, and to engage in scholarly, professional, or creative activities. Continuous development and demonstration of a scholarly foundation for designing and implementing innovative teaching and that supports student learning, ability to create respectful and inclusive learning environments that promote student engagement, participate in learning activities, networks and communities, and engagement in reflective practice to adjust and strengthen one's teaching, learning and assessment practices is required.
    • Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor normally requires evidence or promise of original high-quality research and scholarship and future development as a scholar. Evidence or promise of the ability to obtain funding may also be required where appropriate. Evidence or promise of teaching proficiency or professional activity may also be required.
    • Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor , in addition to the requirements for an Assistant Professor, requires evidence of an established academic program of a caliber equivalent to national recognition by peers. It is expected that a record of high-quality research and scholarship suitable to the discipline or field has been achieved, or that other measurable contributions to professional practice, knowledge engagement innovation, or entrepreneurship have been achieved. Evidence of ability to obtain funding to sustain a research program is required. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and expertise, including a demonstrated ability to teach a variety of courses, design learning experiences grounded in a clearly articulated teaching and/or mentorship and/or supervisory philosophy may be required. A satisfactory record of and active involvement in university, professional or community service is expected.
    • Applicants to the teaching-focused stream will devote the majority of their time to teaching within UCVM and predominantly within the anesthesia curriculum, which can include lecture teaching, lab instruction, graduate program teaching along with service on teaching-related committees. Clinical duties are integrated within the teaching role and the time allocation spent on clinical duties is open for discussion. The successful candidate will demonstrate effective teaching skills. Service to the department, faculty, University, and community is also expected.
    • Applicants to the teaching and research stream will have time allocated for research in addition to teaching. The successful candidate will establish an active research program that aligns with the University of Calgary's and the UCVM's strategic plans. The successful research-oriented candidate will have the opportunity to be part of a prolific and diverse research environment in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, with access to state-of-the-art core infrastructure. Outstanding opportunities for collaboration are available with established research programs such as the Cumming School of Medicine and other faculties on main campus. Additionally, the successful candidate will play an important role in teaching and research supervision of students in veterinary medicine. Service to the department, faculty, University, and community is also expected.

    The University of Calgary has a Distributed Veterinary Teaching Hospital and clinical time is spent in clinics in the community. There is no teaching hospital but we are planning to build a community care clinic. A variety of clinical options can be explored with candidates, based on desires and opportunities available.

    UCVM's AVMA accredited DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 50 students per year, with a planned expansion to 100 students. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
