    JOB OVERVIEW

    The Canadian Cancer Society's Camp Goodtimes provides children and youth affected by cancer and their families with an unforgettable overnight summer camp experience in a medically supervised, safe and supportive environment. We have been committed to providing a camping experience for children affected by cancer since 1985.

    The Canadian Cancer Society believes that time spent at camp allows kids to just be kids, away from their diagnosis. Camp Goodtimes is proud to provide programming that gives joy, confidence, support, and hope for children with cancer and their families.

    The Waterfront Program Leader will live on-site at Camp Goodtimes hosted by UBC's Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, near Maple Ridge, BC for the first 5 weeks of the contract and then at Camp Pringle, Shawnigan Lake, BC for the last two weeks of the contract. This position will work with the Waterfront Supervisor, summer staff team and volunteer team. He/She/They is responsible for the safety and positive experience of all campers, volunteers, and staff on the waterfront and they ensure swimming and boating activities meet BCCA and CCS standards. He/She/They is required to positively role model, teach and politely enforce waterfront safety rules and regulations for all campers, volunteers, and staff.

    This position is a member of the program leader team at camp. The program leader team is responsible for instructing camp activities and supporting other staff and volunteers in delivering programs. They will also have other daily responsibilities such as helping with supervision of campers, evening cabin support, facilitating early morning and evening programs, program logistics, and care/maintenance of camp program equipment.

    COMMITMENT:

    May 11, June 8, 9, 25, 26 – In person training in Vancouver or at camp at Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge, BC

    June 30 – August 4, 2024 – on-site living at camp for 6 sessions at Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge, BC (at least 24 hours off each week). Meals and accommodation included.

    August 9 – 23, 2024 – on-site living at camp for 3 sessions at Camp Pringle, Shawnigan Lake, BC (at least 24 hours off each week). Meals and accommodation included.

    WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

  • Ensure the safety of all campers, volunteers, and staff at the waterfront during all swimming and boating activities.
  • Facilitate camper-focused swimming and boating activities when required.
  • Work with other waterfront staff to be prepared and familiar with Camp Goodtimes waterfront emergency procedures.
  • Assist in facilitating evening and all-camp programs when waterfront is not in use.
  • Contribute to our culture of justice, belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion by ensuring that all staff feel represented and heard regardless of their gender, age, religion, ethnicity, and nationality or race.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience in aquatics, camping, youth recreation and or/ experiential education
  • Experience working with populations with a range of accessibility needs
  • Ability to take initiative, problem solve and work as a team member.
  • Experience or understanding of cancer diagnosis and it's physiological, social and emotional impact or a willingness to learn.
  • National Lifeguard (NL) current within two years
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor current within two years as an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C
  • Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) as an asset
  • Criminal Record Search including vulnerable sector check (once hired)
  • Must provide proof of up-to-date childhood immunizations
