    We have an immediate opening for a dedicated individual to join our team in the position of Policy Officer. The successful candidate will join a dynamic group of skilled individuals working together in a collegial, respectful and inclusive environment.

    The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences promotes research and teaching for the advancement of an inclusive, democratic and prosperous society. With a membership now comprising over 160 universities, colleges and scholarly associations, the Federation represents a diverse community of 91,000 researchers and graduate students across Canada.

    The annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences is the convergence of over 70 scholarly associations, each holding their annual conference under one umbrella, and is Canada's largest gathering of scholars.     Job Summary:

    The Policy Officer supports the Manager, Policy & Research with research and policy analysis tasks, planning and coordinating programmatic activities, and developing advocacy content and resources.

    The ideal candidate is a pro-active team player, who has excellent analytical, research and communications skills, good project management and coordination abilities, and strong experience preparing briefing materials on policy issues.

    This is a hybrid role and requires the successful candidate to come into our Ottawa office two days a week.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Research and policy analysis:

    • Track and analyze (written and verbal) trends and major issues related to social science and humanities research, and post-secondary education at the national and international levels.
    • Prepare briefing notes and other communications on Federation policy areas.
    • Support Manager, Policy & Research in coordination of research projects, and directly undertake research and statistical work where needed, to serve and develop the Federation's policy and advocacy work.
    • Draft memos and briefing materials to present to the Federation Board of Directors' Policy & Programs Committee.
    • Assist with data collection and analysis to support the Federation's Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization (EDID) initiatives.

    Programmatic activities:

    • Coordinate key programmatic initiatives that advance the Federation's policy and advocacy objectives, especially the Big Thinking Podcast, the Big Thinking lecture series, Career Corner and other Congress-related programming.
    • Monitor issues of interest to policymakers, researchers and media to recommend themes and topics for upcoming events, podcast episodes, and programming initiatives.
    • Research, identify, evaluate and recommend potential speakers and podcast guests.
    • Liaise with speakers before, during and after their events.
    • Ensure that Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization (EDID) is incorporated into all aspects of programming.
    • Draft speaking notes, briefing notes, correspondence, and other communication products related to Federation programming.
    • Additional duties as required.

    Job Requirements:

    • A bachelor's or master's degree in the social sciences, humanities, or related field.
    • Minimum of two years' experience in a policy or research-based role, with experience preparing briefing materials to inform decision-making.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to perform qualitative and quantitative research-related tasks.
    • Experience or familiarity with Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization (EDID) especially as it pertains to research, education, policy or society more broadly.
    • Advanced software skills including Word processing, spreadsheets, slide presentations, email, and scheduling.
    • Knowledge of issues related to the research sector and post-secondary education would be an asset.
    • Travel will be required for Congress event and other meetings.
    • Bilingualism in English and French is preferred.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with multiple team members and stakeholders.
    • A detail-oriented mind, with a strong focus on organization, planning, follow-up.
    • Entrepreneurship, initiative, creativity and a proactive attitude.
    • Clarity of expression — both in writing and orally.
    • A sense of ownership of tasks and the motivation to follow through to achieve personal and team goals.
    • Ability to work under pressure, meet competing deadlines, and adapt easily.

    Compensation:

    • Starting salary range: $48,300 - $54,600 (commensurate with experience)
