Do you collect stuff?
The truth is that all of the 'stuff' here on earth, we work so hard to buy and accumulate, does not mean a thing.
At the end of the day people, meaning our children or our loved ones will be cleaning out our 'stuff', going through our 'stuff''.
They will have a very hard time figuring out what to do with all of our 'stuff'. We collect and accumulate this ‘stuff’ throughout our life and we may think it is important. It is not. The only thing of value that remains are the memories and what we deposit into others.
May we all learn to spend less time accumulating ‘stuff’ and spend way more time making memories.

Hi John yes the key is to talk about it with your family. My wife and I are collectors and we are in the process of deciding which stuff to give away, which to sell and which to throw out. Difficult as you said, some things have sentimental value to us. The question is will it have the same value to those we leave behind. The key again is to talk.

Yes my wife and I do.
My comment would be, having cleared three houses of relatives. Yes declutter but remember some stuff can have a monetary value that shows sentimental items are worth keeping.
We have sold, auctioned items that have realised several thousands for things others would have dumped as well as donated many items to charity. The proceeds can pay or contribute towards the cost re House clearance of the real stuff/detritus gathered over the years
A positive is the it opens an insight not only into times you remember, but those before you started to know them.
Having said this our son is not looking forward to having to dispose of our several thousand second hand rare and some first edition books. He says he is going to dump them, but he knows their value and we have suggested how best to dispose of them to ensure the effort is worth while.
It's good to talk about such things.
