“I enjoy hearing my kids critique my records and seeing them have fun at our shows But I’m happy in the knowledge they were baptized in the holy waters of rock and pop by their own heroes, in their own way, at their own time.”
Bruce Springsteen
The Nature Of Inspiration
Before you can write anything meaningful there is a process that happens in your head that actually takes you to the starting line.
It’s called inspiration. And without it, you are really either writing to fill in the blanks of a pre-defined agenda or just basically blathering.
In advertising, where I come from and still mainly live (because everything is advertising) inspiration comes in the form of actively seeking ideas. This, in turn, means keeping your eyes and your mind open to as much of the world as you can.
Every Post You Write Is Actually An Ad For Your Writing

And the degree to which you are able to achieve this passion is directly related to that which inspires you.
The Bruce Springsteen quote above inspired this post. It got me thinking about parenting, which I have some experience with. We raised our two kids in much the same way that Bruce and his wife Patti raised their three.
The whole idea was to make as much experience available to them and let them decide for themselves just what they were inspired to pursue.
My son chose gaming and music and cooking and is now a manager and master baker for one of the world’s top bakery chains. My daughter chose a number of things but ended up as a fiction author whose first novel is in the process of being published in Canada and the US.
These were inspired choices just like the ones we make every day. And the more you open your mind to all the ideas flowing around you, the more you will have to choose from and hopefully be inspired by.
Inspiration & Passion Are Kissing Cousins
Once you are inspired, then you have something to write about in a passionate way and that passion is the thing that makes your readers feel good about what they are reading.
In some ways, the passion you write with can often compensate for a lack of technical or stylistic writing skill you may have. If people feel your passion they are generally happy to overlook any number of technical shortcomings. Because they realize that not everyone who writes is a professionals writer.
I believe that the emotional connection your passion generates in your reader is the most important thing about writing. If they feel the sincerity in your words, well written or not so much, that’s the connective tissue they are looking for.
And it all starts with inspiration.
Inspired People Are My Favourite Kind

These are the people who are capable of harnessing and directing their inspiration and passion to help make good things happen. And to be a source of inspiration for others.
These are people who have mastered the art of thinking for themselves and making their choices in unselfish ways.
Writing is pretty much the same. We are sharing insights that we have been inspired to develop for the purpose of helping people, in any number of way.
Post-Script To The Series
I have written this series to help people understand a bit more about the nature of writing and the ingredients that go into it.
My only hope is that it helps people write a little better, and really be able to communicate their true feelings.
There is a benefit to all of us in that because the better the overall quality of writing in the world becomes, the more people will read.
And the more people read, the more writers will be inspired to start or keep on writing. And so it goes.
