My Hat Collection. It's Not Big. But It Means A Lot To Me

My Hat Collection. It's Not Big. But It Means A Lot To Me

The Digital Sunday Paper

When I was a young wharthog, I had lots of hair. I wore it long and took good care of it. But as I grew older, and my headtop acrage started to recede I became concerned about protecting my forehead from potential solar devastation and so began acquiring hats.

Today, there are very few days when I don't, at the very least, have a hat with me. As a result of this penchant, I have acquired, over the years, a bit of a collection, which I am happy to share with you today.

This is my favourite hat. It designates my
country of origin. | know that wherever |
travel, this hat will be well received and
I will be able to go about my business
without much in the way of hassles.

This, of course, is my Jays hat. | got it for
Christmas last year, as did my grandson,
Rowan. This hat is worn at lot, especially
now as the Jays are battling hard for a
Wild Card slot in the American league. |
do all I can to help, like a good fan.

This is the hat that was given to me by
one of my former clients. They are an
industrial staffing company, who got the
shit kicked out of them in the recession of
2008. Up to then they had some very big
plans that were dashed by forces beyond
their control.

This is a hat my wife got me. Orange
County Choppers. They had one of the
early reality TV series called American
Chopper, which we used to watch. They
built great custom made bikes for busi-
nesses and rich people. Just recently they
declared bankruptcy. Guess people don't
see choppers as status symbols any more.

This is a hat from a printer | used to use
when | was doing a lot of print stuff. They
moved downtown and | ended up doing
way more digital stuff than print. Nice
guys though. | don’t wear this hat at all,
because | find it a bit uncomfortable.

This is my summer hat. | bought it at
Walmart. It's very light and comfortable
Especially in all the crappy heat and
humidity we have been having lately. |
like this hat so much | actually bought
two of them

This is the only fedora type hat | have.

| use it mainly when | am grooming the
foliage on the estate. It's not good for
riding because the brim flops around a lot
and picks up a lot of wind. | had another
hat like this but it was too tight so | gave
it to my grandson. He loves it

This is my Entourage hat. This is a re-

ally high quality chapeau that my wife
bought on a trip to New York with my
sister. | like this hat, but for some reason
it keeps getting misplaced. | had a hell of
a time finding it.

This is a visor. | went through a period
where | had two or three of these. And
wore them a lot. These days, not so much.
What can you say about a visor? | do like
the longer brim. But even Phil Mickelson
got tired of his.

This is a hat my wife bought me a

couple winters ago when it was bitchin’
cold most every day. | mainly wear it for
shoveling and blowing snow. It's not
great on my bike because it keep sliding
down and partially blocks my vision. Kind
of a pain.

This is hat that my wife brought me back
from a trip she took to Vancouver and
Vancouver Island to visit her friend Cath
Paget...who now lives In Nova Scotia. |
wear this hat a lot because it's advertising
the Haida Indians, which is a lot better
than Nike or whatever.

And last but not least, this is my dad's
leather “Andy Capp” cap. After he passed
away 8 years ago now, we were cleaning
up his possessions and all decided to take
one thing. | picked this because it actual-
ly fit me perfectly and every time | see it,
touch, it or put it on, | think of my dad
who | miss every day.So there you go. This is the only collection that I actually have. I probably won't add much to it going forward but you never know. Anyway hope you enjoyed my hat collection as much as I do. Have a great Sunday

to provoke thought and revive the comatose

Excactly Don. But I only wear the fedora around the yard. The toothick goes best with the Andy Capp cap.

Ren\u00e9e Cormier. It's not worth a whole piece. I have chewed on toothpick ever since I quit smoking. Back in the 1970s. Also I have a condition known as RTic Syndrome, which is a mild form of Tourettes, and one of the ticks is teeth grinding. So the tooth pick is a buffer between my top and bottom teeth. Not very romantic. but there you have it.

Follow the toothpick. Must be bad form to display the pick when wearing the fedora!

Interesting post on hats. The most interesting part was your facial expressions and how they changed with each hat. This would be a great inkblot sample for Sigmund Freud to analyze. Gave me a laugh. Also brought up some questions, does the man carry the hat?.......or the hat the man?

What a delightful piece Jim Jim Murray. I used to have a larger collection including a really cool Greg Norman 'Shark' fedora type chapeau. Unfortunately, it and most of my others (along with my vast collection of Hawaiian shirts) were binned last time we moved. I will keep my orange LR2 hat forever though. While the car (Land Rover LR2 - described by a British friend as a 'heap of British rubbish') may be suffering the hat keeps on keepin' on. Loved this!

Jim Murray, you sure are a hat guy, love it! My husband has the 'snow shoveling' hat- it looks just like yours and he says it keeps him very warm. I think my favorite hat is your Andy Cap!! This was cool, you look good in each hat you wear :-))

Classic Jim Murray. I hope the whippersnappers among us will take note of how a pro tells us who he really is. Please post this in All Business. I would do it myself, but we are following a guideline there to have only the original authors post, so they will be available for conversation and interaction. Kudos, on this one, Jim. Big time!
