Something shiny caught my eye and I looked down...
It seems I am metaphorically reflective today and apologize in advance; an aspect of being Canadian I suppose, although I'm not sure which.
The other day, after finishing a slightly above average workout, I was in the change room when something shiny caught my eye and I looked down. On the floor was a shiny American penny; Lincoln side up. It took me a moment to recognize it for what it was and then I smiled a big smile (almost laughed outloud). It was such a pleasant surprise!
Why my reaction?
First of all the penny was discontinued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2013 so in Canada it is a rare thing indeed.
Finding an American penny in the change room of a fitness club in Toronto can be assumed to be a really rare occurrence.
As historical figures go, I think Lincoln was a great man and accomplished great things.
Finally, I was reminded of my American friends and colleagues who I have known over the years. I have been blessed with their friendship, and have grown personally and professionally because of it.
How could someone not reflect on this metaphorically? For me, this penny was a wonderful metaphor for opportunity.
- Opportunities tend to be found in unexpected places,
- Opportunities like to show up when you least expect them.
- Opportunities need to be recognized for what they are.
- Opportunities will take you places.
- And with an opportunity, you will meet wonderful people, learn wonderful things, and be forever changed.
All you have to do is pick it up.
And that is what I did... a very dear friend of mine taught me that.
