About Taher Afridi:

By way of introduction, I am an experienced Information Security and Compliance professional with a strong GRC and Program Management background. I have been responsible for establishing and maintaining various information security programs, many from the ground up, at various private,  public/government, and military sectors. My experience includes ensuring that information assets and associated technology, applications, systems, infrastructure and processes are adequately protected in its digital ecosystem and are compliant with legal, regulatory and contractual obligations. I am very conversant in global regulations and security/privacy compliance frameworks, such as NIST, ITSG-33, ISO27000+, GDPR, and strong familiarity with PHIPA & PIPEDA as well.

I've had the privilege of working in various sectors and honed my skills in roles held at the UAE Military (MoD), the Government sector, the Educational field and also in Military Aviation. My most recent role has been in the private sector, working in the Maritime industry. My scope of work has been vast and diverse. I have been recently very active in one of our subsidiaries that provide financial services and has successfully been licensed by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK. I also actively lead our internal audits for operational and cyber risk that are reported back to the FCA. Throughout, my interactions have mostly been in militarygrade security infrastructures, customers and requirements.

I hold a Masters degree in Computer Engineering, a PMP, CISSP, and ISO27001 & ISO20000, in addition to other technical certifications (CCVP, CCNP, CCNA). In my previous role, I led the Network & Security teams at AMMROC (a Mubadala Military subsidiary) in the role of Network & Security Operations Manager. I oversaw all projects and operations pertaining to IT Networking, Communication, and IT Security. I was responsible for a team of over 18 personnel and a yearly budget of 20,000,000 AED (~C$ 7.6 million CAD). Prior to that, I was managing the Network & Security Operations Team at ADVETI (which is a government/military collaboration in the education sector in the UAE).

Currently, I'm in a Dubai-based Global company, operating out of Toronto, that caters for clients globally in the Maritime sector. I lead the Global Compliance Team in my capacity as the Deputy Chief Compliance Officer for the Group. My responsibilities include the Information/Cyber Security teams and initiatives in a CISO role as the Head of Information Security as well.

I've managed multiple projects that include setting up NOC/SOC, SIEM, ISMS (ISO27001), MSS (managed shared services) and multi-tenancy environments. I've also managed multiple teams across the IT vertical in previous roles, including: IT Support, Systems and Application Development teams. I have been heavily and directly involved in major migration projects that involved setting up IT services, teams, policies procedures and daily security and compliance operations, and have been in position accountable for all the above. I have also been recently involved in third-party sanctions screening and supervise a core Team setting up this internal business unit along with the tools and processes necessary to provide screening, AML, ABC, AFT, and general AFC services in a commercial role.
