    Reporting to the Director of Court Services, this role is central to providing essential legal services for the Ontario Court of Justice.

    It involves managing the prosecution unit and advising key stakeholders like York Region, local Crown Attorneys, the Attorney General, and the Regional Federal Crown Prosecutor.

    Conducts prosecutions under provincial statutes, the Contravention's Act (Canada) and municipal By-Laws in the Ontario Court of Justice.

    Notifies the Regional Solicitor, the local Crown Attorney and the Attorney General of any matter that appears likely to raise substantive legal issues at trial or appeal, including an application for judicial review or prerogative writ sought in relation to a prosecution, anything that may affect the administration, constitutional validity or enforceability of a statute, regulation or By-Law, and any matter where there could be a substantial public interest in its outcome.

    Researches and reports on possible future legal actions including applications for judicial review or prerogative writs sought in relation to a prosecution; Supervises staff, including recruitment, selection, hiring, assigning work, determining training and development needs, conducting performance appraisals and recommending disciplinary action up to and including dismissal in accordance with collective agreements, Regional policies and practices.

    Liaises with the nine area municipalities, the Joint Management Board, the local Crown Attorney, the judiciary, the Attorney General's office and Regional court administration staff regarding scheduling, administrative matters, legal issues and training.

    Liaises with and proactively develops relationships with external stakeholders, senior members of the judiciary, enforcement agencies and Provincial Ministries to facilitate the delivery of provincial offences services.

    The ideal candidate will have a strong background in legal services management, with a proven track record of leadership and innovation.

    Bachelor of Laws degree and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, combined with a minimum of seven (7) years experience in the field of municipal or provincial prosecutions, including experience in a management role.

    Knowledge of theory and practice of advocacy.

    Knowledge of relevant provincial statutes and case law, including municipal by-laws relating to prosecutions and appeals and the relevant sections of the Canadian Constitution 1981 and Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

    Knowledge of current law and its application to provincial and municipal offences.

    Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in strategic planning, change management design, process and implementation strategies to optimize both quality and cost-effectiveness of services.

    Leadership competencies including operating strategically, leveraging diversity and differences, customer focused, ensuring accountability, managing complex problems, financial management, employing interactive and effective communication, fostering collaborative relationships, cultivating engagement to drive vision and purpose, managing and developing talent, establishing and maintaining trust, displaying self-awareness, and demonstrating resiliency.

    Computer literate in Microsoft Office applications and ICON (Integrated Court Offences Network) computer systems.
