    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Director, Experiential Learning is responsible for leading the coordination and expansion of a broad range of experiential learning opportunities across Durham College, with a focus on work integrated learning. This position has three major areas of responsibility: leading a strategic outreach initiative to develop and enhance relationships with experiential learning hosts; streamlining internal practices across academic Faculties to improve consistency and achieve efficiencies; and directing the co-operative education team. The position will partner and collaborate closely with members of the Academic Leadership Team, faculty, field placement coordinators, members of the Work Integrated Learning committee, Centre for Teaching and Learning, Career Services, and external stakeholders to achieve deliverables that improve student satisfaction with, and access to, impactful experiential learning.

    The Director, Experiential Learning, will lead Durham College's efforts to become a provincial leader in experiential learning, and will advise college leadership regarding matters and considerations related to experiential learning. The position will co-chair the Work Integrated Learning Committee to develop best practices and enhance engagement and commitment for experiential learning across schools. This position will also explore and support externally funded opportunities to enhance experiential learning opportunities. This complex and pivotal role is essential for preparing future ready graduates that can effectively contribute to employer success.

    1.Experiential Learning Planning and Execution

  • Collaborate with the Executive Deans and the rest of the Academic Leadership Team, working groups and other stakeholders internally and externally to define a common vision and framework across academic Faculties for experiential learning that advances DC's efforts to be a college of choice for employers and students in offering experiential learning opportunities.
  • Co-chair the Work Integrated Learning committee, along with an Executive Dean. Identify priority actions, and develop and execute a work plan for which experiential learning opportunities can be developed, expanded, and/or improved.
  • 2.Internal Process Improvement

  • Collaborating with members of the Work Integrated Learning Committee, identify areas of inconsistency in processes that require attention.
  • Leverage connections with other institutions and organizations to learn about best practices.
  • Recommend process improvements that will address stakeholder feedback and improve the experience for students, placement hosts, and employees.
  • Develop common tools and processes that create efficiencies, improve satisfaction, and ensure repeat business from placement hosts.
  • 3.External Partnership Development

  • Plan and initiate a strategic outreach initiative to develop and enhance relationships with experiential learning hosts. Work with colleagues to develop assets including social media content, videos, virtual tours, and "new and notables" to increase the profile of experiential learning and its benefits to students and employers.
  • Arrange and co-host industry tours to increase awareness of program fit to industry needs.
  • Act as a key conduit and central contact point with respect to experiential learning, and identify, initiate, evolve and sustain partnerships with government, employers, community, education, non-governmental organizations, and sector councils to advance experiential and work integrated learning.
  • Maintain strong linkages by contributing to relevant internal and external committees, and participating in events.
  • Refer industry partners to other college resources for services as appropriate, such as applied research, career services, scholarships, donations, corporate training, etc
  • 4.Co-operative Education

  • Provide direction and support to the co-operative education team, with a focus on supporting students and enhancing the placement host experience.
  • Lead activities to support a donor-funded experiential learning initiative, aimed at enhancing business development activities and supporting student success.
  • 5.Policy and Performance Measurement

  • Identify institution-wide implications for experiential learning and recommend appropriate changes to policy, processes, and practices that positively impact student experience and student success.
  • Collaborate with the Institutional Research team on the capture and reporting of experiential learning data for inclusion in the Strategic Mandate Agreement reports.
  • Establish and evaluate performance indicators, costs, and risks associated with existing and potential partnership opportunities.
  • Explore and implement strategies for gathering feedback from placement hosts and recognizing/appreciating host participation
  • 6.Academic Engagement

  • Develop and sustain a supportive model of experiential learning in conjunction with industry, community, government, and other partners to enhance students' essential employability and workplace ready skills, including those who are traditionally underrepresented.
  • In collaboration with Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), support faculty professional development and the scholarship of teaching and learning in areas relating to experiential learning.
  • Work collaboratively with, and support the work of, CTL in the creation and enhancement of classroom-based experiential learning (eg, simulations, capstone projects, etc) and the pedagogical quality of external hosted experiential learning opportunities
  • Working with CTL, establish a repository of resources and tools that support experiential learning.
  • Assist faculty and external stakeholders with using Riipen to maximize engagement, in collaboration with CTL, and assess utilization and impact of the tool.
  • 7.Professional Development

  • Maintain expertise and knowledge of experiential learning trends in postsecondary education through review of academic research, attendance at webinars and conferences, leading presentations at events, and participation in other professional development opportunities.
  • Represent DC at local, provincial, and federal events, symposia, and workshops, including the Ontario colleges experiential learning committee.
  • Advise and serve on relevant internal committees and working groups as appropriate. Actively participate in team meetings and leadership meetings. Collaborate with team members to meet deliverables.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a Masters Degree in adult education, college administration, public administration, community planning
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in the leadership and management of human resources, and project management preferably in an academic environment, is critical.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing experiential learning initiatives.
  • Teaching and curriculum design experience at the postsecondary level is desired
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in all matters related to students, staffing and programming.
  • High degree of conceptualization, analytical ability, initiative, independent action and presentation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including report and proposal writing skills at an advanced level
  • Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills combined with a good understanding of Collective Agreements
  • Strong project management and team management skills and abilities
  • Excellent organizational, monitoring and assessment skills including proficient use of computers and MS Suite software
  • Knowledge of external community and critical sectors within the regional economy
  • Driver's licence and access to a vehicle to enable attendance at events and meetings
