- For all new applications, review, assess, analyze and evaluate detailed and complex medical and non-medical risks.
- Determine mortality ratings and make substantiated logical final decisions to approve, postpone, decline, reconsider or propose alternate coverage for Individual Life insurance, which are in the best interest of all parties involved.
- Prepare clear and concise analysis of risk and make quick and accurate decisions.
- Review existing coverage for possible non-disclosure resulting in fraud and material misrepresentation to determine if sufficient medical information was received to rescind or void coverage.
- Underwrite requests for: Addition of riders; changes to non-smoker premium rates and reinstatement requests.
- Using excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, project a professional, first-class image to applicants, credit unions, physicians, reinsurers, paramedical providers, laboratories etc. while obtaining detailed information and communicating results ensuring adherence to strict privacy guidelines.
- Meet or exceed published service standards. Work collaboratively with the underwriter team to achieve all service standard goals in order to ensure an optimal customer experience.
- Act as an underwriting quick reference for account managers, all operational areas, credit unions and applicants.
- You adapt to change and are committed to continuous improvement, in order to exceed client expectations.
- Your strong communication skills allow you to clearly convey messages.
- You're an effective team player who shares knowledge to support your peers.
- You have a post-secondary education with 1-2 years of Life, Disability, and Critical Illness underwriting experience.
- You must complete the Associate, Customer Service (ACS) designation, including LOMA 280, 290, 315, ACS 100 within 2 years of hire.
- Solid working knowledge of medicine, insurance law, vocational and financial risk.
- Excellent knowledge of both medical and non-medical terminology and impairments.
- Strict confidentiality with respect to client's medical history, financial status and other personal information.

The Underwriter provides professional, first class underwriting while using judgment, product knowledge, skills and experience to investigate the eligibility of all applications for Life, Critical Illness, Disability and Loss of Employment insurance. The role reviews, assesses, analyzes and evaluates detailed and complex medical and non-medical risks (medical, avocational, occupational). The role determines mortality ratings and makes final decisions to approve, approve substandard, postpone, decline, withdraw, reinstate or propose alternate coverage for Individual Life insurance, which are in the best interest of all parties involved. The Underwriter communicates the final decision results to the applicant, ensuring that sensitive decisions are communicated in an empathetic and professional manner. Negotiation of requirements and/or final decisions, through discussion with the Underwriting Consultant, Manager, or Reinsurer is required.
