    Position Purpose

    CO-CREATH Lab invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral researcher in health inequities. Understanding of and interest in addressing the health effects of racism, gender inequality and other forms of marginalization, and strategies to promote health equity, empowerment, and capacity building are required. We are seeking candidates who consider themselves to be the next generation of change agents who have an advanced knowledge of the social determinants of health within a Canadian context and its impact on vulnerable populations, particularly for African, Caribbean, and Black Canadians, ability to apply an SDH lens when developing manuscripts for publication.

    The applicant also has an established record of research productivity, independent investigation, creativity, and initiative. Experience with qualitative and quantitative analysis and use of appropriate software is required. Experience engaging with communities and developing knowledge mobilization products is also valuable. Fellows at CO-CREATH Lab receive training and mentorship in community-based equity-driven research and opportunities for publication. Fellows must be located in Ottawa and can work a mix of on-site and remote work.

    Reporting directly to the Director of the CO-CREATH lab, the post doctoral research fellow will assist with implementation of ongoing community-based research projects on Black health that address health inequities within our communities. Our ideal candidate is an experienced quantitative researcher who cares deeply about disrupting anti-Black racism and eliminating health inequities experienced by Black communities.

    The appointment will be for 1 year with possibility of renewal dependent on the candidate's goals, qualifications, and performance.

    Annual Salary: 50,000$

    In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • In collaboration with the CO-CREATH uOttawa research team and its partners, you will carry out data analysis and interpretation, write up research results for publication or presentation, and engage with community partners and African, Caribbean and Black communities in knowledge mobilization activities. Based on themes identified by you or the research team members, analysis may include provincial data sets or Ottawa-specific site data only.
  • You will be required to perform community engagement activities, monitoring, data analysis and evaluation on the following projects:

  • 1. Strengthening organizational capacity for health research, data management and knowledge mobilization (KM) in ACB communities across Canada (APCI 2.0)
  • 2. Strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on African, Caribbean, and Black communities in Ontario (CAPP 2.0)
  • 3. Strengthening community capacity for HIV prevention and care among African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) women in Ontario (CADWo-HIV PENs)
  • 4. Optimizing HIV and health services for Canadians of African Descent (CAD) women: A multi-sectoral and innovative approach to capacity building. OHTN Chair funding.
  • What you will bring:

  • PhD obtained within the past five years in epidemiology, health or social sciences or other relevant discipline with a background in health-related research.
  • Strong background in quantitative analysis techniques, including survey implementation and data analysis.
  • Proven track record of research publications.
  • Familiar with preparing plain language reports of study findings and presentations for a variety of audiences.
  • Detail oriented, accurate, dependable and flexible individual, able to work independently and capable of multi-tasking.
  • Skilled in conducting literature searches and retrievals using electronic databases.
  • Strong understanding of how the evolving HIV epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic affects African, Caribbean and Black people in Canada.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team setting.
  • Fully proficient with business software (word processing, spreadsheets, etc,), data management and analysis software, applications to manage references and bibliographies, and internet-based research tools.
  • Experience in community-based research and working with African, Caribbean and Black and/or Indigenous populations would be an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written English skills are required. Spoken and written French would be an asset.
  • Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 – Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1, 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
