    Our Internship program offers paid 18-month internships for new grads interested in a career in municipal public service. The program provides training, development, and on-the-job experience for candidates that have graduated within the last 24 months.

    We are inviting applications for the Up to 18-month term position of Security Intern in Property, Fleet and Environment.

    The Intern Program is designed to provide experiential learning and maximum professional exposure to interns in their chosen field of study while exploring the benefits of working for the municipality. Over the course of the internship, candidates will learn about government policy, operations, administration, services, and planning in a collaborative and supportive environment.     Reporting to the Security Advisor, the Security Intern will work alongside senior Security Specialists and assist with the installation, maintenance and repair of security systems and software owned and operated by HRM. This includes installation and maintenance of CCTV cameras, access control equipment and intrusion alarm systems. This position works closely with other security unit members and requires the ability to work positively within a team environment, as well as the ability to organize well and problem solve. This position also provides technical support to end users, as required, with a focus on customer service. This position requires access to confidential employee information.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists senior Security Specialists with maintenance of HRM physical security systems and software, including intrusion alarms, CCTV and access control systems.
  • Uses developing troubleshooting skills to isolate and fix issues with physical security systems and make necessary repairs.
  • Completes work orders in a timely manner and maintains accurate notes.
  • Assists senior Security Specialists and Security Advisor with the design/implementation of technical solutions.
  • Provides technical support to end users, as required.
  • Proactively seeks technical guidance from more experienced staff on complex issues.
  • Executes all work in accordance with Provincial and local regulations, as well as HRM Corporate Security best practices and standards.
  • Collaborates with internal trades and contractors, as required.
  • Works on mechanical locks and key systems.
    • QUALIFICATIONS
    Education and Experience:
  • Alarm and Security Technician certification, Electronics Technician certification or Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering Technology/Technician certification, Electrical / Electronic, Instrumentation & Controls or Wireless Communications Degree or Diploma
  • Experience working on and installing various intrusion alarm software platforms and equipment will be considered an asset
  • Experience with access control and video management software and equipment will be considered an asset
  • Experience working with and installing telecommunications structured cabling will be considered an asset
  • To be eligible for the internship, candidates must have graduated within the last 24 months or be confirmed to graduate in June 2024 from a recognized or legally authorized university or community college.
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada at time of application and maintain this status for the duration of 18-month term.

  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated an interest in public policy or government administration
    • Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic networking principles and basic trouble shooting skills for network issues.
  • Developing technical skills and experience related to electronic security systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings and a basic understanding of wiring diagrams.
    • Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check. You will be provided with more specific information during the recruitment process.
