    The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Infrastructure and Facilities Coordinator, Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

    The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute is a partnership between the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services. The focus of the Institute is to support research that addresses the complex challenge of cancer, at the biological and therapeutic levels, the population and public health levels, and the personal and societal levels. Individual members of the Institute are engaged in many aspects of discovery, clinical, and applied cancer research. The Institute is responsible for overseeing cancer research infrastructure, lab facilities, and resources within designated cancer research space at both the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine and the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre (Alberta Health Services).

    Reporting to the Charbonneau Infrastructure and Facilities Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for facility-related aspects of the Institute's operations at the AC, including arranging the purchasing and the servicing of both large and common equipment and infrastructure, addressing space- and equipment-related requests, and overseeing the autoclaving facilities within the AC, all in compliance with the policies and procedures of both the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services.

    Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

    • Space and Facilities Planning Management:
      • Responsible for coordinating lab renovations and moves
      • Responsible for coordinating the decommissioning of labs, lab check-outs, and the transfer or disposition of equipment chemicals, and other supplies as required
      • Responsible for coordinating office moves (arranging for cleaning, etc.) and minor office renovations and upgrades, as required
      • Responsible for ensuring staff and trainees follow safety regulations in common spaces
      • Fosters and maintains strong relationships with Institute faculty working within the Arthur Child
      • Fosters and maintains strong relationships with Arthur Child research units, Cumming School of Medicine departments/Institutes, and Alberta Health Services
      • Monitors compliance with all biosafety policies and procedures within Institute facilities at the AC
    • Acquisition and Management of Equipment and Associated Supplies:
      • Responsible for coordinating the acquisition and maintenance and repair of both large and common equipment
      • Responsible for liaising with vendors, contractors, and facilities personnel from both AHS and UofC
      • Responsible for maintaining an equipment inventory and conducting periodic inventory audits
      • Responsible for ordering supplies for common equipment and facilities, as required
      • Responsible for ensuring that staff/personnel and trainees are trained in the safe and proper operation of common equipment, in collaboration with equipment "super-users"
      • Consults with researchers to help identify need for new equipment and/or enhancement of infrastructure
      • Provides advice to Institute leadership on the space and equipment needs
    • Autoclaving Facility Management and Oversight:
      • Operates and maintains sterilizer units and dishwashing equipment
      • Works with research groups within UofC and AHS to ensure reagents and glassware are autoclaved and cleaned on time
      • Performs monthly checks on the sterilizer units to ensure they meet safety standards
      • Participates in audits of the equipment as required by the Safety office

    Qualifications / Requirements:

    • BSc or MSc (preferred) in a science- or health-related field with related laboratory facility experience. A Laboratory Technician Diploma may be considered
    • A minimum of 3-5 years of progressive work experience related to the primary purpose of the position (i.e., managing research laboratory infrastructure). A combination of experience and skills will be considered
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to engage effectively with stakeholders, including staff, faculty, and students at the Institute, UofC, and AHS
    • The incumbent must be able to handle several infrastructure projects and competing daily tasks simultaneously, and work with individuals and groups from across the Institute to plan and manage space and equipment requests for projects related to the Institute. There are sometimes conflicting deadlines to manage, so flexibility and composure are required
    • Maintains the highest level of discretion, integrity, and trust in all dealings
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Excellent professionalism, diplomacy, and a high degree of confidentiality
    • Strong project management skills. Ability to think conceptually and directionally
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
    • A successful and dedicated team player, able to make significant contributions towards the collective efforts and success of the Institute
    • Understanding of University of Calgary and/or Alberta Health Services research, finance, and human resource policies/procedures is an asset. Experience using PeopleSoft and eFIN is an asset
