    The Manager, Hazardous Waste & Technical Services is responsible for Air Canada's hazardous waste compliance program and waste disposal services. As well, the Manager provides technical expertise and industry leading best management solutions for regulatory compliance projects and programs at Air Canada and its applicable subsidiaries within the following key areas (but not limited to):

    • Effluent, Stormwater and De-icing fluid management
    • Hazardous & special wastes
    • Halocarbons
    • Contaminated sites
    • Storage tanks, and
    • Environmental Emergency Management and Spill response

    In addition, this position is responsible for the development and management of other compliance programs as assigned.

    Responsibilities:

    Responsible for the development and management of the hazardous waste compliance program in co-operation with the branches and subsidiaries to ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations system wide. Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Advises on regulatory requirements and interfaces with government agencies. Ensures that appropriate control measures for all environmental and significant environmental aspects are in place to limit any possible liability to the Corporation.
    • Responsible for the development and maintenance of environmental management plan documentation and compliance instructions.
    • Provides support and technical expertise to Branches, system wide, in understanding regulatory compliance requirements and implementing environmental plans.
    • Acts as the liaison with local regulatory authorities and is responsible for regulatory reports, documentation, and responses to the regulatory agencies.
    • Collaborate with Branches in developing hazardous waste storage solutions and processes (internal and external) to ensure ongoing compliance and improve compliance performance and operational efficiencies.
    • Oversee system wide hazardous waste generator registrations and other provincial hazardous waste programs, e.g., RPRA manifest fee invoicing.
    • Provides technical expertise in the development of the environmental training programs.
    • Responsible for the implementation and management of other compliance programs as assigned.

    Responsible for the oversight and management of the hazardous waste disposal services for operating branches in Canada:

    • Overseeing the hazardous waste disposal contract process in collaboration with Strategic Purchasing including conducting RFPs, negotiations, as well as performing technical and financial evaluations of vendors.
    • When required, conducting hazardous waste disposal site audits and associated evaluations.
    • Oversight for vendor management including contract invoicing validation, vendor performance evaluation and conflict resolution, all to ensure environmental compliance and minimize cost, risk, and liability to the Corporation.
    • Devising strategies for the Branches to ensure operational requirements, contractual obligations, and legal requirements are met.

    Provide environmental compliance expertise, advice, and solutions to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws affecting Air Canada by:

    • Assessing and providing feedback to Branches on the feasibility, design, and construction plans of projects related to environmental matters, e.g., storage tanks, hazardous waste storage facilities, wastewater treatment, cargo warehouses, etc.
    • Reviewing and assessing new projects and process modification in the context of their environmental impacts to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including necessary permits and control devices. Participate in vendor selection as required.
    • Providing oversight, including contractors, on specific issues such as acquisition and installation of pollution control equipment with respect to applicable projects.
    • Ensuring that the environmental aspects of assigned projects are documented (e.g., drawings, operating manuals, etc.) and appropriately stored and communicated.
    • Providing technical expertise and management of projects' compliance permit applications and acts as liaison with regulatory authorities. Submits regulatory reports as required by applicable laws and regulations.
    • Provide technical expertise and assistance to Branches and Regional Managers on proper management of spill prevention and response including but not limited to exploring opportunities to mitigate spills; recommending best management practices to control, reduce, eliminate, and clean-up spills; and support collaborative spill prevention/remediation initiatives with airport authorities.

    Provide expertise in the management of risk, liability and exposure associated with contaminated sites. Specifically in support of:

    • The management of contaminated sites including site cleanup and the production of site closure report.
    • The development and implementation of ongoing site monitoring program to ensure Corporate due diligence.

    As per scheduled rotation, provide 24-hour coverage/availability to respond and manage environmental emergency issues on a local basis and aids the applicable station Emergency Response Team.

    Provide support and subject matter expertise in the response to serious environmental accidents/incidents involving an aircraft in operation (Pub 400 incidents) as Field Team member and makes appropriate recommendations.

    Ensures all policy and program documentation is maintained up to date within requirements of the EMS.
    Continually maintains a high level of professional proficiency and knowledge of environmental matters, regulations, technologies, and developments affecting the portfolio. Share good practices and problems/lessons learned with colleagues leading sustainability programs, Branches, fuel consortia and alliance carriers.

    Qualifications

    • University degree in Engineering, Environmental Sciences or equivalent
    • 5 years minimum experience in hazardous waste management, environmental engineering, or relevant technical experience.
    • Knowledge and experience in site remediation
    • Knowledge of current environmental legislation, regulations, and related industry best practices.
    • Knowledge of Environmental Incident Response an asset
    • Environmental Professional Designation an asset
    • Ability to manage projects, demonstrate initiative and be able to work independently.
    • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to foster strong relationships with and manage internal and external stakeholders.
    • Must have excellent problem solving and analytical skills
    • Commitment to quality and pride in work, patience, and perseverance
    • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Programs (Access, Excel, Word).
    • Must be available and able to travel domestically and internationally approximately twice a month

    Working Conditions:

    • Mainly in office space and requirement to work in hangar/ramp environment on a regular basis
    • Must be able to manage stress from having to deliver on multiple tasks within prescribed timelines
