    The Position:

    The Director of Human Resources will manage day-to-day human resource activities in a unionized setting as well as be a strategic consultative partner to the management team. The Director of Human Resources will also promote company culture and values, as well as execute people initiatives, internal customer partnership and support, driving HR functional excellence, and process improvement in a location with 150+ team members.

    Principal Responsibilities:

    · Develop fair and effective hiring processes to ensure that SPC hires/selects the most qualified people for jobs and prepares individuals for promotion and advancement.

    · Develop and manage the compensation and benefits programs, including the way in which excellence in performance is rewarded and recognized.

    · Chairs the SPC pension committee and works with members of the pension committee to ensure SPC complies with all the regulatory requirements associated with the DB and DC pension plans.

    · Chief negotiator for SPC in labour contract negotiations with Unifor, Local 492 Works with the union and management in applying the terms and conditions of the agreement.

    · Provides leadership in the development and implementation of safety policies and procedures and ensures SPC complies with all relevant safety legislation that is applicable to the business. Works closely with the General Manager in developing World Class Safety initiatives.

    · Advises management on designing the organization, planning the allocation of work and defining jobs so that the efficiency and effectiveness of the Company is optimized.

    · Approves the formal training and development plan for all employees to ensure that they possess the required skills and that they learn and develop on a continuing basis. This involves developing/selecting training and development programs, recommending appropriate courses to supervisors, coordinating the orientation program, health and safety training, and apprenticeship programs and evaluating training programs and activities.

    · Develop and support performance management processes by providing training and tools to management for planning objectives, evaluating performance, and dealing with employee conflict and performance issues.

    · Liaise with government agencies to ensure compliance. Inform the General Manager of all issues and activities that impact on the Company's obligations under the applicable legislation and standards, e.g., health and safety, and employment standards. Recommend strategies for ensuring compliance and implement actions to remedy issues and problems.

    · Keep abreast of changes in the profession of Human Resource management, e.g., new trends, processes and technologies, through personal research, networking and attending conferences and courses.

    · As part of the senior management team, develop and refine business and strategic plans for SPC. Submit for approval the yearly operating budget for Human Resources, monitor expenditures against plans, explain variances and develop and implement remedial action to ensure budgets are achieved.

    · Perform management functions in accordance with the Company's Human Resource Policy and Ontario's labour and employment legislation, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable environmental legislation. This includes, but is not limited to, determining the training needs of employees, implementing training programs, and providing on-the-job training, managing employee performance, dealing with employee conflicts, conducting performance appraisals, selecting new hires and recommending employees for promotion.

    Scope of Responsibility:

    · Reports to the Plant General Manager

    · Manages two direct reports

    · Chief negotiator for the company in contract negotiations with Unifor local 492

    Experience/Qualifications

    · Degree or diploma in human resources management, industrial relations or business administration

    · Ten years of experience in industrial relations or human resources, preferably in a unionized industrial setting

    · Five years of managerial experience

    · Eligible for certification as a Certified Human Resources Leader or Executive (CHRL or CHRE)

    · Strong knowledge of the legislation and standards related to human resources (e.g., Employment Standards) and collective bargaining

    · Excellent English language skills

    · Strong analytical and computer skills
