    The Clean Technology Team(CleanTech) at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) providesscientific expertise in the areas of clean technologies, chemical engineering,environmental science, and industrial microbiology, and delivers applied researchservices to support regional, national and multinational companies that operatein the resource, energy, and clean technologies sectors.

    The primary areas of researchfocus of the Clean Technology team are the development of methods andtechnologies to characterize and add value to industrial residual materials,wastes, and by-products through the application of microbiology and chemical principlesin collaboration with industrial partners. CleanTech operates as anindustry-driven, highly multidisciplinary applied research facility fullyintegrated with the Campus Alberta system.

    The successful candidate forthis Research Associate position will join a highly diverse, inclusive andsupportive team of research professionals with backgrounds in microbiology,chemical engineering, environmental science, and applied chemistry. The newteam member will have specialized expertise in enzymatic reactions and be anenthusiastic individual with a strong aptitude for teamwork and collaboration,comfort with failure, patience, eye for detail, tenacity, unshakable optimism,and keen sense of humor. This new team member will work on a portfolio ofmultidisciplinary projects in close collaboration with a consortium of industrypartners and other Applied Research Centres within NAIT.

    KeyResponsibilities:

  • Fill the role of knowledge repository in the space ofenzymatic transformations
  • Conduct a variety of laboratory-based techniquesincluding enzymatic reactions and operating analytical equipment
  • Compile and interpret data including statisticalanalysis
  • Developing lab techniques and protocols
  • Writing and/or reviewing reports and proposals
  • Prepare presentations and communicate results andobservations effectively between project teams and industry partners as needed
  • Develop and execute experimental plans with minimaloversight
  • Skills& Abilities:

  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills,ability to work independently without supervision, work in a multidisciplinaryteam, and participate in team culture
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience performing complex or novel enzymaticreactions in a research setting is essential; experience in industrial settingsis a major asset
  • Experience with characterization and enzymaticconversion of starch into value-add products is a major asset
  • Experience with microbial conversion and fermentationis a major asset
  • Experience in experimental design and methodoptimization
  • Experience with chromatography analytical equipment
  • Experience with proposal writing and preparingtechnical reports
  • Experience with bioinformatics is an asset
  • Qualifications:

  • PhD. or MSc. In Biochemistry or a related field. ABSc. will be considered with 4 or more years of directly related experience ina research lab
  • Minimum of 2 years of related laboratory workexperience
  • Equivalencies may be considered
  • Remuneration : $71, $95,372.94 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification –Research Associate I).

    Thisposition is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE)Collective Agreement.
