    General Maintenance Worker - Saskatoon, SK, Canada - University of Saskatchewan

    Primary Purpose: Provides a broad range of preventative maintenance and repair services for assigned areas/buildings within Consumer Services. Performs maintenance and repair activities directly or refers them as appropriate

    Nature of Work: Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the incumbent completes timely and cost effective maintenance, repair and renovation assignments using a broad range of tools and materials. Understands and applies the core value of Student Life within the residence department. Performs all duties with consideration to student relations, demonstrating cross cultural and language sensitivity as required. Plans and completes all assignments according to established safety procedures and departmental standards. Effectively refers maintenance and repair needs as appropriate, and ensures they are completed as expected. Treats all confidential information and materials in a confidential manner. Communicates issues of importance or concern to the immediate supervisor in a timely manner. Collaborates with others as required to complete assignments and support team efforts. Works to resolve conflicts and maintain harmony among co-workers. Effectively manages assigned projects as directed. Sets priorities for own work and meets deadlines. Complies with all relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures. Participates as an active and supportive member of the residence maintenance group.

    Typical Duties: Acts as a first contact for repair request. Undertakes all plumbing, heating, refrigeration, electrical, masonry, tinsmithing, carpentry, painting, locks smiting and mechanical work that can be completed without journey person certification. Inspects, repairs and maintains a broad range of equipment and structures (e.g. electronic locks, hot water radiator valves, door closers, smoke detectors and exhaust fans, etc.) Builds and/or repairs structures (e.g. closet shelves, cupboards, window and door screens and frames, partitions, furniture, etc.). Works with a broad range of materials (e.g. window glass and screens, drywall patching fill, paint, grouting, ceramic tiles, various adhesives, sealants, etc.). When necessary, contacts the appropriate trades for work requiring completion by journeyperson trades (e.g. code requirements, specialized jobs). Co-ordinates apartment maintenance work based on resident movements and needs as directed by the Supervisor. In consultation with the supervisor, plans and undertakes a range of renovations including building walls, drop ceilings, countertops, etc. Assesses and determines procedures for working in hazardous situations and locations. Undertakes basic materials fabrication as required (e.g. plastics, bending and shaping metal, moulding, cutting to size, etc.). Conducts room and apartment inspections following resident notice of departure and undertakes repairs as required. Operates/handles machinery and equipment (e.g. trucks, jack hammers, hand augers, table saws, lathes, grinders, planers, jointers, press drills, routers, grinders, scaffolding, etc.) as required. Tracks and reports use (i.e. quantity and quality) of supplies and inventory. Occasionally picks up inventory. Diagnoses varying levels of maintenance problems and selects proper method to rectify the problem (e.g. heating problems, plumbing leaks, appliance malfunctions, etc.). May teach and/or supervise new casual workers. Oversees contract and tradespeople to ensure they perform assigned work as required and reports discrepancies to supervisor or ARM. Supports residents unfamiliar with the use of apartment equipment, appliances, and general heating, ventilation and plumbing applications. Provides residents with safety information (e.g. door chains, peepholes, security and fire procedures, door locks, etc.). May serve as first contact for police, firefighters, and students in emergencies.

    Qualifications
    Education: Completion of grade 12.

    Experience: A minimum of three to five years of relevant experience. Basic computer skills are required. Some trades-related training would be an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Must hold and maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

    Skills: Requires the application of sound working knowledge and skills. This position deals with moderately complex issues and concerns and addresses problems by evaluating situations and adapting established methods and practices to resolve them. The incumbent demonstrates an understanding of the impact of their work within the University context and of their approach to customer service with internal and external contacts. Basic computer skills required to enter and retrieve maintenance information programs and files as well as use email correspondence effectively. Proficient math skills to perform basic calculations; ability to determine material requirements; ability to use various hand and power tools safely associated with the trade; ability to perform heavy manual labour and be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces. Have good interpersonal and communication skills.
