    Assistant Manager, Student Life - Saskatoon, SK, Canada - University of Saskatchewan

    Primary Purpose: Reporting to the Residence Manager, Student Life (RM-SL), the Assistant Manager, Student Life (AMSL) is a senior member of the Student Life Team responsible for select administrative and managerial functions in a manner consistent with Residence Department and University goals, mission, and values. The AMSL works with the larger team of professional and student staff in the Residence Department who support the academic and personal success of residents.

    Nature of Work: The successful candidate will be required to handle confidential information in a sensitive manner and communicate clearly, effectively, and collaboratively with a diverse student, parent, and staff population. This position has sessional peaks and an annual cycle. Peak periods (such as academic year start and end) require wide availability and have high work demands (e.g., evenings and weekends). Irregular work hours are required in order to facilitate availability to students and staff during the regular cycle due to staff meetings, trainings, and other after-hours support. The successful candidate will also provide coverage during peak holiday periods or other absences and will be required to provide on-call support after-hours.

    Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

    • Special Projects
      • The AMSL will oversee work on key portions of the Student Life portfolio, including but not limited to hiring, on-boarding and training, and priority or trend-driven student support initiatives.
      • In consultation with the RM-SL, assist in design and/or implementation of plans in Department and University priority areas, including but not limited to International and Indigenous student engagement
      • Facilitate and coordinate work on research, policy projects, or partner initiatives to inform the operation and direction of the Residence Department and facilitate strong relationships on-campus
    • Reporting
      • The AMSL will, on a regular basis, supply the RM-SL with a report on activities including updates on staff management and special projects and participate in or hold consultations
      • On an as-needed basis, create, monitor, or supply progress reports on initiatives or staff
      • Review, follow-up on, and, where appropriate, make recommendations on, the weekly, semi-annual, and annual reports of professional staff
    • The AMSL will participate in the hiring of new professional staff and/or, in consultation with the RM-SL, prepare and participate in professional staff on-boarding; oversee hiring, on-boarding, and training of student staff contingent
    • Provide general guidance, support, and supervision for professional staff; assist, and provide coaching for, performance concerns; escalate unresolved performance and disciplinary matters
    • Serve in Manager's stead in their absence, and cover absences or vacancies of professional staff or areas
    • Crisis Response & Management
      • The AMSL will assist with and/or share after-hours support for Coordinator on-Call
      • Work with Coordinators to field inquiries, develop response plans, inform the appropriate personnel, make necessary referrals, and escalate to the RM-SL as needed
      • Develop, implement, and/or oversee proactive systems and data collection
    • Department Support
      • The AMSL will provide direct support and area management assistance to the Coordinator of Voyageur Place, given the size and complexity of this primarily undergraduate nature of this area
      • Support both Student Life and Operations in matters such as after-hours staff support in special circumstances and work on joint initiatives or internal policies as required and agreed upon
      • Serve as the main point of contact and is directly responsible for the Faculty in Residence program and all partnerships with The Office of Sustainability
      • Oversee development, monitoring, or use of assessment and evaluation, including drawing on existing data and engaging new tools to collect, analyse, and build responses to identify and respond to emerging goals, trends, and challenges of student support and Residence systems

    Education: Undergraduate degree is required, with preference given to candidates with education in relevant disciplines. A Master's degree and/or formal education (i.e. certificate) in relevant areas (i.e. crisis, counselling, conduct, and management) will be considered an asset.

    Experience: Minimum of three years professional work experience in the Residence and/or Student Life fields.

    Skills: The successful candidate has excellent oral and written communication, excels at setting and meetings goals autonomously and as assigned or in consultation, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while managing competing priorities. Candidate must possess strong administrative skills and database experience.The successful candidate will demonstrate proven abilities in strategic planning and assessment, as well as in key areas integral to the Student Life portfolio, including but not limited to:
    • Crisis response and management
    • Staff and performance management
    • Student-centered program development
