The Director, HR is responsible for leading the activities related to human resources, labour relations, and culture at 49th Parallel.
Additionally, the Director, HR is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team and a trusted advisor to the President.
The Director, HR plays a key role in helping achieve 49th Parallel Roasters' Vision to "Build North Americas Leading Specialty Coffee Movement", and embed our core values throughout the organization:
A trusted partner to the President and the Senior Leadership Team, bringing strategic thinking and expertise to support People & Culture programs, initiatives, and decision making
Design, execute, and refine programs including: performance management, total compensation, career and leadership development, recruiting, and union relationship management
Lead initiatives to build an organization that is highly mission, values, and performance driven with the goal of creating and supporting high performing teams
Training & Development
Evaluate individual and organizational training & development needs and lead programs to close skills gaps
Facilitate and manage the leadership development training plan with the goal of improving 49th's bench strength and giving leaders throughout the organization the tools to support and develop their teams
Oversee talent mapping, including annual org planning, recruiting plans, and the creation of individual development and succession plans for key roles and top performers
Create and facilitate workshops to support the senior leadership team's development
Lead the recruiting strategy for senior level roles
Develop and communicate a clear employer brand via job posts, job boards, company website, and social media; responsible for managing the company's LinkedIn profile, Indeed account, and 49th's career page
Support and train managers on recruiting best practices, the importance of DEI, and legal compliance
advise on compensation packages for new roles, balancing internal equity with market rates and experience level
Manage the payroll administration team, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation (BC, ON, and QC), company policies and the CBA
Responsible for training and administration of the Company's payroll platform: Dayforce by Ceridian (payroll, time and attendance, workflow management, HR, employee onboarding, and Wallet)
Lead communications, as required, for policy changes, crisis management, change management, etc.
Ensure values and celebrations are included consistently throughout the year, as well as key performance metrics
Lead strategy and execution of engagement tracking (i.e. surveys)
Work with social committee to ensure regular and meaningful events throughout the year
Maintain a collaborative and positive relationship with the Teamsters Local 213 Union
Report on relevant People & Culture KPIs – turnover, engagement, salary trends, performance ratings, online reviews (Glassdoor), etc.
Coach managers through performance management challenges, providing legally and culturally appropriate counsel to create clear expectations for supervisors and employees while mitigating risk
advise on discipline if required, and mitigate legal risk in decision making
Work with immigration consultants and lawyers to support approved work permit / PR applications, including the LMIA process
Mentor the small but mighty HR and Payroll team
Manage budgets and negotiate contracts, where relevant
Work with legal counsel to ensure policies, procedures, and employment contracts and other legal documents are compliant with the applicable provincial or state legislation
Policy development and adherence that supports the Company's culture and relevant legislation
Share current trends, best practices and new technologies in human resources with the team
Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
~ CPHR designation a strong asset
~ Minimum of 10 years of Human Resources experience with at least 3 in a senior leadership role
~3 years of Union relationship management experience; experience at the bargaining table a strong asset
~ Knowledge of provincial employment legislation and legal requirements, specifically in BC, ON and QC
~ Proven success in culture building within a small organization (200 employees)
~ Strong MS Office skills (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)
~ Ability to manage projects with competing priorities
