    The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is seeking a passionate individual to join the Strategic Conservation and Innovation team in Quebec as an intern in science and conservation planning. Working closely with the project manager in science and conservation planning for the Quebec region, this intern position will assist the NCC team in carrying out conservation planning projects at the landscape and property scale. Specifically, the intern will conduct thematic literature reviews and participate in the drafting of documents related to projects aimed at accelerating conservation in southern Quebec. The individual will also contribute to the scientific support program by organizing a mobilizing event with various experts and collaborators in the field of research. This internship will provide the opportunity to gain concrete experience in the field of private land conservation, as well as deepen knowledge on connectivity, endangered species, and conservation strategies.

    Tasks and Responsibilities:

    Under the supervision of the project manager for science and conservation planning, the intern's tasks and responsibilities will be as follows:

    1. Landscape-scale conservation planning

    Conduct a literature review and participate in the drafting of a methodological document related to a project for an Atlas of areas of interest for conservation in a Quebec ecoregion.

    Gather information and write a synthesis document on complementary conservation measures.

    2. Scientific support program

    Contribute to the organization of a mobilizing event that brings together university researchers, government experts, conservation organizations, or research bodies collaborating with NCC.

    Classify and prioritize knowledge gaps concerning the conservation of natural environments at different spatial scales, which NCC and its partners must address in the short or medium term.

    3. Property-scale conservation planning and stewardship

    Assist in developing a strategic plan for monitoring species at risk and associated monitoring protocols.

    Perform a literature review on the use of artificial intelligence for monitoring and identifying species.

    4. Support for the acquisition of knowledge related to ecological connectivity

    Carry out scientific literature reviews.

    Create summary sheets related to the literature reviews.

    Perform all other related tasks assigned by supervisors.

    Skills and attributes required:

    This internship is aimed at a person with the following skills:

    University studies in biology, environment, geography, or a related field;

    Excellent level of French (spoken and written); English (an asset);

    Practical knowledge of the landscapes, communities, and conservation issues of Quebec;

    Knowledge of scientific article research tools and skill in scientific popularization;

    Ease with the public, ease of communication; good interpersonal skills;

    Knowledge of Microsoft environment software (word processing, spreadsheet, graphics);

    Flexibility, reliability, personal motivation, and the ability to work both independently and as a team;

    Demonstrated ability to organize and integrate complex information from various disciplines.

    Employment conditions:

    This is a full-time internship lasting 40 weeks from May 27, 2024, to February 28, 2025, inclusively;

    Number of hours per week: 37.5h, from Monday to Friday;

    Salary: $20.00/h;

    There will be the possibility of taking one (1) week of unpaid leave during the internship, the timing to be determined with the project manager;

    The selected person may be based at the Quebec office (preferably) or Montreal. They will have the possibility of working remotely in part;

    Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee. Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally authorized to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial laws and regulations;

    Must not be over 30 years old at the start of the internship;

    Must be a graduate of a post-secondary study program;

    Must not be enrolled in school for the fall 2024 session (not on summer or winter break);
