    City Manager's Office

    The City Manager's Office is looking for a co-op student to assist with organizational planning and program delivery.

    Reporting to the Assistant Director, Corporate Planning & Strategic Project Support, the ideal candidate is enrolled in the Master of Public Administration program with a keen interest in municipal governance and leadership.

    The student should be proactive and capable of working independently on assigned projects, conducting research, and providing written recommendations. During this co-op term, the focus will be on areas such as risk management, project management, administrative policies, internal engagement processes, process mapping, and documentation.

    The successful candidate should have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and exceptional oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse professional team. Proficiency in translating technical materials and using presentation software and graphics to simplify complex information is essential.

    POSITION FUNCTION

    As part of the Co-operative Educational Training Program, you will receive challenging assignments to pave the way for a career in municipal government. Your role will involve contributing to supernumerary projects and supporting the unit's overall objectives.

    KEY DUTIES

    • Assist in enhancing the City's operations using existing tools and software platforms under the supervisor's guidance.
    • Participate in developing future-oriented projects aligned with departmental strategic goals by providing support in the field or office.
    • Conduct research, analyze data, summarize findings, draft reports, and present to the supervisor for feedback.
    • Collaborate on testing new tools and processes to promote shared learning.

    INDEPENDENCE

    Tasks are assigned by the supervisor and reviewed upon completion.

    Any issues are escalated to the supervisor.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Physical Effort: Normal with occasional heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs).
    • Mental Effort: Normal.
    • Visual/Auditory Effort: Normal.
    • Work Environment: Office, Driving, Public Events.

    KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Organizational and prioritization skills.
    • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Ability to comprehend and execute job-related instructions.
    • Quick independent learning capabilities.
    • Capacity to maintain strict confidentiality.
    • Proficiency in City word processing, spreadsheet software, and related specialty tools, including social media platforms.
    • Accurate record-keeping with attention to detail.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification: High School diploma.
    • Enrolled in a recognized Canadian Post-Secondary Co-operative Education Program.
    • Currently in full-time education with plans to return to full-time studies in the next academic year.
    • In good standing in an Undergraduate Degree Program or Technical School Diploma Program.

    Experience: Not mandatory, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Pre-Employment Requirements

    Successful applicants must verify their qualifications.

    Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 35-hour work week

    $30.85 per hour, Pay Grade 2
