THE PARADOX OF THE FREEDOM CONVOY It seems like forever ago that a bunch of truckers, a very small minority of the trucker universe, descended on Ottawa to protest vaccine passports. They hung around and hung around, all the time being financed by what was soon to be discovered, far right wing American money. This protest eventually morphed into the blocking of a couple of key border crossings which, in turn, started to have a real impact on the flow of goods between Canada and the US. At some point this stopped being a non-violent protest and became a huge pain in the ass for Canada, especially for PM Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland. It also became a cause celebre in the US, where they just love to turn everything into left versus right politics, Today, all these blockades are starting to be cleared and the money is being cut off. The reason for this is simple. Familiarity breeds contempt. If you hang around for a while, people will get the message. If you hang around too long, these same people will just get pissed off. These truckers, who started out with the best of intentions, have become pawns in the left versus right political game. Paradoxically, the best thing they can do for their cause right now is go home.
