I woke up with nothing on my mind today. I work really hard to make Saturdays like that.
On Saturdays, you do the things you want to do. Not the things you have to do. They may be things that need doing but the attitude that you have on Saturday is that you want to do them because you know you don’t have to do them.
For example. I have a little fan that I blow onto the back of my big old Mac because the motherboard is slowing dying and-and it heats up, so the fan keeps it cool. This morning I figured out how to configure that in the space the big old Mac occupies in my new office. It’s pretty elegant solution if I do say so myself.
Then I had a shower and while I was in there the idea for a post on Saturdays occurred to me. I get a lot of ideas in the shower. Needless to say I am very clean.

Just Me, Myself & I

I have the house to myself today because my wife is down hanging with my sister in Fort Erie. I’ll be going there for dinner and to bring her home tonight, but today I’m as free as the proverbial bird.

Time For Some “Fake” News

When my coffee was ready I went down into the family room and watched a bit of the Michael Smerconish show on CNN. He was interviewing Tom Friedman, who is actually one of the sanest people in American. Tom writes books and column for the New York Times and always makes an incredible amount of sense.
https://www.nytimes.com/column/thomas-l-friedman

Right now he is promoting a book on the future of work called Thank You For Being Late: An Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations.
In it, he talks about what people need to understand about how the job market and the concept of work have changed in the 21st century.
I won’t read this book because I don’t work in the conventional sense of the word. I write. Sometimes I get paid for it. Sometimes I just do it for my readers.
According to Tom, if you want to be successful in the world of work, you need to being a lifetime learner.
Well for a writer that just naturally comes with the territory. If you weren’t a lifetime learner you would very quickly run out of things to write about. But if that was the case, then you wouldn’t be a real writer. You would merely be a victim of the need to write and that is pretty much a trip though the Ninth Gate Of Hell for a lot of people.
Tom and Smerconish also talk a bit about The Drumph, as I refer to him, and most specifically his latest Twitter rant about how the Obama administration bugged his phone during the election campaign.
This, like almost everything The Drumph does, was a totally fact challenged allegation that was really designed as another lame attempt at distracting the media from their relentless pursuit of his true relationship with Russia, which, of course, could be the thing that finally brings him down.
It’s no wonder he goes to Florida every weekend to play golf. He is trapped by all this lying all week long. And to live like that, you have to be either very strong willed or just plain batshit crazy.
I thought about this for a while, as I was making another coffee and some toast. It occurred to me how sad it must be to have spread so much bullshit and now have to defend it all with other bullshit.

Young Americans

33817d71.jpgWhile I was making my second coffee I put on the radio. We have a great classic rock station down here called Giant FM, and while I was doing this stuff, David Bowie’s Young Americans, one of the great rock songs of all time, came on.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydLcs4VrjZQ

I don’t know all the words to this song, even though I have loved it for 40 years. but I sang along with most of it, at the top of my voice in my empty house, dancing around the kitchen with my butter knife for a microphone.
I was really wailing when it hit me that David Bowie and I are the same age and he was gone but
88b8f85f.jpgI was still here, relatively healthy and ready for whatever was coming. Life sucks sometimes.
It briefly filled me with sadness that everybody can’t die peacefully in their sleep at a really ripe old age. But then John Mellencamp came on singing ‘Hurt So Good’ and I was onto the next thing.
Because it’s Saturday and I never stay in one place for too long.

My ‘Hood'

f2e4e72a.pngThe sun is shining but I have been living in Canada all my life. I know what -8.5 degrees means. It means bundle up.
So what will I do with the rest of the day. Well, who knows?
One of the things I was thinking of was taking the back roads down to Fort Erie and stopping in Welland to check out a furniture store there that someone told me about. We’re still in the market for a few smaller things for the house.
I also have to pick up the ingredients for my famous Caesar Salad which I will be making for dinner at my sister’s.
One of the things I have discovered about this area is that St Catharines is the northern most part of a miniature megapolis of towns and villages that stretch out south and east to all the way to Niagara Falls and due south to Fonthill and Welland. It is, in fact quite a large area except that it doesn’t seem that way because you can get everywhere so quickly.
So this is my Saturday, breakfast around lunch time, a little writing, lots of classic rock, a little bit of political bullshit, some carpentry, some driving, some food prep and a lot of great conversation around the dinner table to come.
The only thing that would make it better is if it were a beautiful summer day and I could show you how gorgeous this part of the world is when everything is in bloom.
My wish for you is a Saturday that it just as much fun as I'm having.

Jim Murray It really does seem that St Catharines is agreeing with you even if the temperatures are jaw droppingly freezing ( Anything below 25 degrees celsius here is catastrophic) Thank you for the e mail re the film treatment and do tell , what's with the unusual spelling of your new neck of the woods ?
