    Description
    Job Responsibilities :

    Reporting to the Supervisor of Horticulture, the Senior Greenhouse Operator oversees all functions of a greenhouse and provides direction to the Greenhouse Operator.

  • Oversees the day to day management of the greenhouse operations including scheduling work of volunteers, seasonal employees and greenhouse personnel;
  • Inspects and tends to the growth of potted plants, perennials including watering, seeding, transplanting, and pest management;
  • Maintains all amenities of greenhouse including mopping, cleaning and sweeping of conservatory; Ensures the facility is presentable for public i.e. wedding photos, tours;
  • Monitors temperature/ humidity;
  • Operates small equipment and tools including lawn mower, rototillers, pruners, pliers, shovels, rakes, hand pruners, loppers, saw, and pruning knife to enhance and maintain the growth of all plants;
  • Records and submits records of daily activities including duties of staff, sow dates, transplant dates, spray dates, fertilizer dates, and building inspection dates;
  • Develops new work methods, procedures or manuals including more economical growing techniques;
  • Performs routine maintenance and service on power tools including: lubricating, cleaning filters; plows, power trimmer, hand pruners, chainsaws and small hand tools;
  • Assumes accountability for pesticide levels, safety procedures and proper plant inspection, and allocation of resources;
  • Involves repetitive movements including periods of sitting, walking, standing, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting, pushing or pulling when potting, transplanting, seeding, mixing soil, moving plants, watering, building check, plant inspection.
  • Requires short durations of mental effort when transplanting small seedlings, flower bed weeding, and occasional periods of pest control.
  • Requires the development of procedures in addition to adaptation of SOPs to various situations.Industry and departmental best practices are explored in procedure development. Can make decisions regarding varying greenhouse operation schedules, Pest ID and extermination, IPM practices including biological controls Pathogen ID and solution Propagation schedules to buffer crop/seed germination failure, building maintenance and repair. Incumbent makes choice in methods, procedures or sequences of operation.
  • Directs, plans, organizes, schedules, assigns, and develops work methods and procedures for both full/part time, volunteers and student staff.
  • Monitoring the performance of floral displays in the field and making fertilizer and IPM recommendations
  • Required to work with purchasing to create and award tenders
  • Potential for after hour calls and available to work weekend and holidays
  • Exposure to chemical/cleaning substances, dust/dirt, interruptions, moisture/steam.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    • Qualifications :

  • Diploma in Horticulture or Greenhouse Management.
  • Landscape Exterminators License and Greenhouse/Interior Structural License.
  • 2-3 years of related experience in growing/propagating of perennials, potted crops, plant identification, integrated pest management; working knowledge of Argus Green House systems is an asset.
  • Previous experience in directing the work of others.
  • Effective communication skills both oral and written to provide instructions and follow up work orders for others.
  • Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties
  • Possess ability to read, write and comprehend operation manuals, short memos, letters, and equipment manuals.
  • Possess basic mathematical competencies for comprehending operation manuals, material acquisition, measuring areas and mixing chemicals using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Knowledge of proper greenhouse housekeeping techniques, heating systems, pest identification and elimination.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety issues relevant to daily activities and equipment operation.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Provide effective customer service when dealing with others including the public and staff.
  • A copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver's License Class G minimum with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour must be provided. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant, who is a new hire, will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town administered road test as a condition of employment.
