Faculty Position and University Research Chair in Law, Technology and Innovation
The Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor to commence July 1, 2024. The successful applicant will be nominated for a University Research Chair (URC) in Law, Technology, and Innovation. The applicant must be an exceptional researcher who leads a recognized or very promising interdisciplinary research program focused on legal issues arising at the intersection of law, technology, entrepreneurship, innovation, and policy, and could include the role of law in addressing the accelerating changes in technology that impact our culture, the economy, the world of work and business, the environment, or other domains, as well as social inequities that arise from these changes. The goal of this chair is to increase innovation, intensity, and impact of research in the field of technology law, while developing wide-ranging interdisciplinary partnerships with researchers, policymakers, and a broad range of interested parties. The successful applicant will hold a permanent regular position in the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law in the English Common Law Program or in the French Common Law Program, where they will be expected to establish a strong, externally funded, collaborative and interdisciplinary research program that will support the University's Strategic Research Plan in the areas of Shaping the Digital World and Advancing Just Societies, and contribute to the advancement of equity, diversity and inclusion in research, as well as in the supervision and research training of graduate students (LL.M., Ph.D.).
The Faculty of Law is proud to serve as the home-base for the Centre for Law, Technology and Society, a leading interdisciplinary research centre in the area of law and technology. The Centre has close partnerships with the Faculty's Centre for Health Law, Policy and Ethics, the Human Rights Research and Education Centre, and the Institute for Science, Society and Policy. The successful applicant will be able to contribute to the activities of the Centres and – depending upon their proposed area of research – to the activities of other research institutes and centres at the University of Ottawa such as the Public Law Centre, the Centre for Environmental Law and Global Sustainability, the Research Centre on the Future of Cities, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Black Health, the Nexus for Quantum Technologies Institute or the Cyber Hub.
Located on the unceded ancestral lands of the Omamiwiiniwug Algonquin nation, the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa boasts 75 full-time faculty members in its Common Law Section and 35 in its Civil Law Section, which combined with its six research centres, 15 chairs, and three laboratories, fosters an exceptional intellectual environment for study (or learning), research and teaching. Our graduate programs include a general master's degree (LL.M.) and master's degrees with the following concentrations: international humanitarian and security law; global sustainability and environmental law; international trade law and foreign investment; feminist and gender studies; health law, policy and ethics; and law and technology. We also offer a doctoral program in law (Ph.D.).
The University Research Chairs (URC), tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional researchers or acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. URC nominations are adjudicated on the level of research excellence of the nominee, and the quality and originality of the proposed research program; the potential to achieve international recognition in the field, to attract and retain excellent students and trainees, to create a more equitable, diversified, and inclusive research environment; and on the relevance of the research program to the University's Strategic Areas of Research. Each URC receives a $25,000 annual research stipend from the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation. Up to $5,000 of the stipend may be used as a salary supplement to the nominee. The University recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate's record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process of the URC adjudication.
