    The mission of The Reach is to be the center of cultural and creative innovation in the Fraser Valley.

    The Reach is a gathering place that fosters intercultural and intergenerational exchanges in an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

    The Reach serves many important cultural roles in Abbotsford: it is a contemporary art gallery, a local history museum, and a regional archive.

    We provide a year-round selection of exhibitions, public programs, events, and online resources to a demographically diverse audience of approximately 30,000 in-person and 300,000 online visitors annually.

    A major focus at The Reach is arts- and heritage-based public programming that creates critical dialogue around issues and topics of local relevance.

    Our exhibitions and programs are designed to support public education and social wellbeing and often address difficult topics facing our community.

    Programs are tailored for educators and students, seniors and lifelong learners, pre-school age children and parents, families, artists and art lovers, local and professional historians and archivists.

    The Reach is at the forefront of reducing barriers to museum participation, and proudly follows a pay-what-you-can model for admissions, allowing audiences from all walks of life to access exhibitions and programs without cost as a barrier.

    Border, a collaboratively curated exhibition that presents the plural history of the demarcation of the western Canada-US border along the 49th parallel.

    Parallax will feature historic loan materials and associated digital interactives that will prompt audiences to reconsider the border as a visual invention, revealing how it was drawn through Indigenous lands by American and British officials, astronomers, and engineers in the 19th century.

    Historical photographs, watercolours, maps, and ephemera related to the Northwest Boundary Survey of the Pacific Coast will be set in dialogue with contemporary Indigenous creative practices and scholarly perspectives.

    The project is guest-curated by Dr.

    Shawn Brigman (Spokane Tribe of Indians), Michelle Jack (Syilx/Okanagan), Deb Silver (Semá:th), Laura Wee Láy Láq (Stó:lō, Wuikinuxv), Carrielynn Victor (Stó:lō, Coast Salish & Mixed Western European Heritage), and T'uy't'tanat- Cease Wyss (Skwxwu7mesh, Stó:lō, Metis, Hawaiian, and Swiss).

    Reporting to the Curator of Art and Visual Culture and working closely with the Guest Curator, the Curatorial Research Fellow, Parallax will carry out primary and secondary research, content creation, writing/editing assignments in support of exhibition development, planning, presentation, and programming.

    An ideal candidate is an early-career scholar who is well versed in nineteenth-century history and visual culture.

    A high level of familiarity with archival, collections-based, and scholarly research methodologies, as well as a capacity to distill—clearly and concisely—detailed facts and complex concepts from large volumes of scholarly content, are highly desired.

    The primary responsibilities of the Curatorial Research Fellow, Parallax, will be to:

    Carry out primary and secondary research assignments in support of exhibition development, potentially including research in local and regional libraries, archives, and object repositories as required; Assist in the development, copyediting, proofreading, and fact-checking of didactic and other texts related to the exhibition (introductory panels, extended and object labels, as well as promotional materials), as well as the version management of these documents.

    Additionally, the Curatorial Research Fellow, Parallax, may also be asked to support the project by carrying out some or all of the following duties:
    Assist Curator of Art & Visual Culture in maintaining exhibition checklist up to date and related documentation pertaining to loan and rights & reproduction requests;
    Support the preparation of project grant applications (e.g. Contribute to and support the development of digital interactives by third-party contractor;
    Assist with meetings, correspondence, and other administrative tasks related to the exhibition, as requested;
    Assist in the process of designing and producing the exhibition presentation;

    Assist in the planning and delivery of public programming related to the exhibition; Carry out other duties in support of this project, as required.

    The Curatorial Assistant for Parallax must possess all, or most of, the following qualifications, experience, skills, and qualities:

    University students or graduates in the disciplines of art history, museum studies, history, public humanities, or other relevant field; enrollment in or completion of a graduate degree highly preferred;
    Proven ability to conduct art and/or history research, including but not limited a facility with library and database resources, primary source research methods, and capacity to learn and synthesize historical detail;
    Familiarity with or willingness to learn art museum and gallery curatorial processes and exhibition development procedures;
    Outstanding organization and project management skills, with keen attention to detail;
    Excellent communications skills, including advanced written and spoken English

    Proficiency in or willingness to learn Microsoft Office (particularly working knowledge of Excel and annotation tools in Word), file sharing (SharePoint), project management (Monday.

    Professional demeanour, responsiveness to feedback, collaborative spirit, and the proven ability to work respectfully and effectively with a wide range of project contributors and partners;
    Valid driver's license and willingness to travel locally for research purposes is preferable.
