    Position Purpose

    The Director, Major Giving & Corporate Partnerships will be integral to the strategic and operational leadership of the Corporate Relations team and will be focused directly on driving revenues and developing meaningful partnerships that are mutually beneficial. The incumbent contributes to the positioning of the University, and help it attain its long-term objectives. The incumbent is also responsible for identifying potential sources of funding, developing as well as executing cultivation and solicitation strategies for advancing a portfolio of prospective and existing corporate and foundation partners and ensuring alignment and relationships with high-level internal (faculties, academic leadership teams, partnership development teams, managers, senior management, etc.) and external stakeholders.

    In this role, your responsibilities will include:

    Strategic Planning: Plays a leadership role in planning, implementing, coordinating, and managing the corporate revenue strategies in support of the University with the clear objective of securing significant funding commitments from corporations and foundations. This includes the creation of short-and long-range strategic plans with a primary focus on developing and expanding the major and principal level portfolio as well as the corporate engagement program. Based on business intelligence analysis (including understanding corporate branding and community investment strategies), helps formulate local, regional and national corporate partnership strategies and identifies partners and relationships that will support the University's priorities.

    Account Development: Manages a portfolio of up to 100 prospective and existing major, corporate and foundation donors (donations and partnerships valued up to $1M and more), through the cultivation, proposal, solicitation, and stewardship phases. Meets expected revenue and activity targets annually. The Director's revenue generation activities and secured partnerships will contribute to the University's current Campaign goal of $500M by 2025.

    Relationship Management: Proactively instills and nurtures a positive, collegial, collaborative relations with stakeholders to discover and understand their personal and business objectives and their potential connections with the University. In consultation with the Executive Director and members of the Development Leadership Team, brings together a wide range of campus partners (faculties and units, Research, Procurement, Alumni Relations, etc.) and coordinates actions to ensure that key individuals and corporations are approached in a coordinated and strategic way. Works closely with the different University partners to design highly competitive engagement, solicitation and stewardship plans and strategies.

    Operational Planning: Provides strategic and operational leadership in the planning, development, implementation and ongoing review of effective and efficient campaign plans. Builds and oversees the timely implementation of a pre-approved calendar of activities. Works with various internal stakeholders to leverage data analytics, KPIs and benchmarking to drive segmentation and strategy and ensure coordination of engagement opportunities for the cultivation of existing and prospective partners.

    Networking: Builds, cultivates, and maintains relationships with corporations, foundations, external suppliers, alumni, donors, communities, and professional organizations to inspire support for the University of Ottawa's top priority funding initiatives and value-based partnership with the University. Actively networks at stakeholder and community events toward building the presence and reputation of the University and creating mutually beneficial corporate partnerships. Acts as a key representative in university-wide initiatives and external community events that are geared towards securing opportunities from corporations, on a regional, national, and international level.

    Performance evaluation and Reporting: In collaboration with Advancement Services, evaluates and makes recommendations to further the success of the corporate partnership programs. Prepares and submits progress reports to the Executive Director and Associate Vice-President and recommends solutions to improve performance where needed.

    What you will bring:

  • Degree preferable at the graduate level in business, management or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) an asset/
  • Deep understanding of the principles of fundraising and best practices.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of progressive fundraising, business development and sales experience with a proven track record of achievement and success with developing prospective individual and corporate donors and closing major gifts.
  • Experience developing, presenting and closing large, complex partnership proposals.
  • Experience and ability to synthesize and use relevant data to drive engagement strategies.
  • Knowledge of the not-for-profit sector, with preference for experience in a university or higher-education environment.
  • Proven experience in strategy development and project management.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both official languages (French and English)
  • Experience using software and computer programs as well as fundraising databases; knowledge of Raiser's Edge software is an asset.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends, and travel regularly on business. Must have a valid driver's license and passport.
  • Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 – Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1, 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
