    Description:

    The Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Journalism Studies Research and Practice, with a focus on critical journalism studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1st, 2024.

This position is part of a cohort of similar faculty searches in Anthropology, Arts, Culture & Media, Biological Sciences, Computer & Mathematical Sciences, Management, and Physical & Environmental Sciences. New colleagues will have the opportunity to be connected with previous cohorts of faculty from under-represented groups, including those hired through targeted efforts in the last four years in departments spanning the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities.

    Candidates must have a PhD in Journalism Studies, or Media and Communication Studies, or related disciplines by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.

    The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence in journalism studies, which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, the submitted research statement, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. We welcome scholars whose areas of expertise engage with critical approaches to journalism studies, including one or more of the following: Black studies, Indigenous studies, ethnic or diaspora studies, critical race and gender studies, and post-colonial studies, as well as traditional and emerging approaches to journalistic production, media policies, digital or data journalism, digital labour, political economy, media ethics, and research methodologies. Candidates whose robust scholarly record is enhanced by professional journalistic experience and/or community-centered journalistic engagement are especially welcomed.

    The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the Specialist (Joint) Program in Journalism, as well as the Journalism stream of the Media, Journalism and Digital Cultures (MJDC) program, with the opportunity to collaborate in curricular development and implementation across the Department's eight programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and supervising students in the undergraduate degree program, fulfilling other professional and administrative activities related to teaching, and participating in curriculum development and departmental and university committee work to contribute to program and departmental initiatives, especially in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching and learning. Teaching experiences in the following areas are preferred: critical approaches to journalism, journalistic production, media policies, digital or data journalism, digital labour, political economy, and media ethics, and research methodologies.

    The successful candidate will also have a graduate appointment in a disciplinary unit that reflects their training and background with the clear priority in graduate teaching that contributes to their research agenda in Journalism Studies and the establishment of a wider scholarly research community on journalism at University of Toronto.

    Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Candidates must also demonstrate skills in both their teaching abilities and in their capacity to instruct a wide range of courses in journalism.
