    Description

    The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

    This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

    We are looking for someone who is eager to take advantage of the opportunities for personal growth inherent in our research program while at the same time producing outstanding results. The ideal candidate will bring both the attention to detail needed for the routine aspects of research and also the unconventional thinking to envision new project directions.

    • Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
    • Assist in collecting data, entering data, analyzing data, and managing and maintaining clinical research databases
    • Interact with study subjects and apply research rating scales
    • Participate in the design and development of research processes including identification of methodologies, proposal development, recruitment strategies, and data analysis processes
    • Prepare research reports, contribute to the writing of manuscripts, and give presentations resulting from research activities
    • Coordinate a clinical research study, recruiting patients, scheduling, performing patient assessments, reimbursements, and coordination of physician exams and tests
    • Conduct literature reviews and knowledge syntheses
    • Write and develop ethics submissions and grant applications for new research projects initiated and modifications for current projects if necessary
    • Complete and manage approvals for Alberta Health Services as necessary and required by the research ethics board
    • Manage own time and project tasks effectively. Demonstrate strong communication, team and interpersonal skills, and an ability to exercise judgment and take initiative to solve problems within established guidelines via conversation with the project lead
    • Perform basic procedures, including phlebotomy/blood draws
    • Knowledge and operation of databases as needed
    • Other duties as required

    Qualifications / Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in a health-related field and/or experience in a health care setting or health research required
    • Previous experience with subjects with autoimmune disorders is considered an asset
    • Knowledge of quantitative research methods and statistics is an asset
    • Understanding of research biobanking procedures an asset
    • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
    • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (eg., Tri-Council)
    • Must be eager to develop new skills and to seek out new challenges
    • Excellent organization skills, including the ability to work independently and to multi-task
    • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
    • Knowledge of the University of Calgary processes and procedures is desirable
