    JOB SUMMARY

    Cultural and Heritage Programs is responsible for multi-disciplinary arts centres, heritage and museum facilities and structures, the delivery of arts, heritage and museum public programming and events, volunteer program development, audience development, and exhibits and research.

    Under the supervision of the Museum Administrator, Shared Museum Resources, the Exhibition Development and Research Officer is responsible for developing innovative permanent, temporary, traveling and special exhibitions that interpret the local history relevant to museum/historical sites currently owned and operated by the City of Ottawa: Billings Estate Museum National Historic Site; Pinhey's Point Historic Site; Fairfields Heritage House; Nepean Museum; and Cumberland Heritage Village Museum. This role is also responsible for historical research to support the objectives and activities of the City of Ottawa Museum and Historic Sites.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Completion of 3 year university degree in Applied Museum Studies, History, or a related field

    Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a museum setting conducting historical research utilizing primary and secondary sources to support exhibits, publications, interpretation and education programs; preparing research reports, developing interpretive themes and messages and writing exhibit text; creating object-based exhibits from inception through completion including concept, design, fabrication, installation, evaluation and maintenance; and budget, supervisory, and teamwork experience.

    • Graphic design (in exhibition design and fabrication)
    • Interpretation, assessment and synthesis of historical information
    • Exhibition design and fabrication: drafting, construction, and installation
    • Project management: planning, organization, delegation, negotiation, and operational budget and contract management
    • Strong oral and written communication skills
    • Interpersonal, collaboration and promotional skills
    • Recruitment, training and supervision of part-time staff, students and volunteers
    • Keyboarding skills and ability to use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or equivalent, Word, Excel, Outlook, the Internet, and other computer programs as required
    • Self-starter, resourceful, capable of working independently with minimal supervision
    • Team leader and player, capable of working in a multi-disciplinary team environment
    • Creative and innovative approach to issues and problem resolution
    • Flexible approach to work assignments, proven ability to manage changing priorities and stress effectively

    WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

    • Driver's License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated; This position requires the successful candidate to use their own transportation.
