    We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Technologist to join the Altitude Research Facility Group within the Aerospace Research Centre, to support the development and certification of thermal and electric propulsion systems as well as to assist with the certification of aircraft components subjected to bird and drone strikes. The Senior Mechanical Technologist would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

    The work will be conducted in three (3) different test facilities. Two (2) are located at the Montreal Rd Campus and one is located at the Uplands Campus.

    You will be expected to operate and maintain existing world-class facilities which work under tight and dynamic schedules. Overtime and weekend work will be expected during the testing phase of a project.

    You will support the development and implementation of complex testing infrastructures including design, fabrication/purchasing, assembly, and commissioning of such systems.

    You will be responsible to understand test requirements and to set-up, modify and possibly repair test articles.

    You will participate in management activities such as planning of projects, preventive and corrective maintenance. Coordination of day-to-day activities as well as development of documentation in accordance to NRC Aerospace ISO process.

    You will be expected to liaise with clients and/or project leads to provide schedule updates and to engage in technical discussions throughout the project life cycle.

    Finally, you will be expected to adhere to established occupational health and safety guidelines and to actively engage in activities to continuously improve workplace safety.

    The candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team and expected to autonomously operate under the oversight of a Team/Project Leader or a Senior Technical Officer. Occasionally, functional supervision or training of other team members will be required.

    Education


    Diploma (3 years program) from a post-secondary school in a Mechanical Trade or Mechanical Technician or Mechanical Technologist.

    Experience

    • Extensive* and recent* experience with operation, monitoring and maintenance of complex, industrial size, test facilities;
    • Significant* experience, from design through fabrication of complex fluid delivery systems and/or mechanical hardware to meet precise requirements/specifications;
    • Significant experience in the assembly, repair and modification of mechanical hardware;
    • Significant and recent experience in safe operation of hand and power tools and/or material handling equipment;
    • Significant and recent experience organizing medium complexity projects along with demonstrated experience setting priorities in a multi-client environment; and
    • Demonstrated experience in creating technical documents including but not limited to process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), work instructions, start-up and shut-down procedures, project risks assessments and project schedules.

    *Extensive refers to more than 7 years; significant refers to 2-6 years of relevant work experience and recent refers to work experience acquired within the last 5 years.

    Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

    Technical Competencies

    • Advanced ability to understand and logically analyze industrial processes, identify technical issues, troubleshoot and solve problems in complex, industrial size test facilities;
    • Advanced ability to assess test requirements, interpret technical drawings as well as P&IDs;
    • Basic knowledge of fundamentals of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics;
    • Advanced ability to complete manual tasks and material handling using hand and power tools according to best practices and while maintaining all safety standards.
    • Advanced ability to self-manage multiple concurrent projects and appropriately balance work load in order to maintain project schedules;
    • Demonstrated ability to identify resources (financial or physical) and provide guidance to junior team members to meet task timelines; and
    • Demonstrated ability to produce effective written technical documents to aid optimal and safe test facilities operation.

    Assets:

    • Familiarity with ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3 piping installations, and pressure vessel installations;
    • Working knowledge of 3D CAD design software (SolidWorks preferred);
    • Working knowledge of electronics, electrical systems, and area classification;
    • Basic knowledge of preventive maintenance programs (Hippo CMMS preferred).

    Compensation


    From $73,744 to $94,839 per annum.
