    Employment Period: Monday, May 6, 2024 up to Friday, August 30, 2024
    Hours of Work: Monday to Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm with occasional weekend shifts, as required.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and monitoring of restoration/naturalization sites throughout the City's parks, forestry and natural areas;
  • Support City staff to manage volunteers on restoration and tree planting projects incooperation with partner groups, ensuring the health and safety of the participants;
  • Aid in the implementation and administration of various city wide invasive species management projects;
  • Perform data entry and quality control of natural areas and invasive species program data;
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and mapping related to naturalization and invasive species control;
  • Assist with the administration of various Forestry related contracts;
  • Removal of stakes and tree guards from trees off of warranty;
  • Watering of young trees in City parklands;
  • Visit sites and conduct inspections to collect and analyse data;
  • Assist with development-related tree preservation tasks;
  • Operate small tools and landscaping equipment;
  • Perform tree inventory data collection;
  • Identify trees and update relevant attribute information including species, size, location and arboricultural prescriptions;
  • Utilize GPS to provide accurate geospatial locations;
  • Update, organize and ensure consistent application of protocol;
  • Provide Quality Control for inventory program;
  • Data analysis & research to generate reports and summarize findings;
  • Other duties as assigned.

    • Skills and Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution as a full time student AND accepted into a full-time post-secondary institution in September 2024 or January 2025 (proof will be required at the time of interview);
  • Background with Natural Resource or Forestry education or currently enrolled in a Natural Resource or Forestry specific program that deals with knowledge and identification of trees is preferred;
  • Ability to perform strenuous tasks outdoors, with the potential for rough terrain and adverse weather conditions;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Must possess Green Patch CSA approved safety boots, 6"-8" to cover ankle made of suede or leather material;
  • Must hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver's License Class G minimum with a driving record that meets City standards (proof will be required at time of interview);
  • Access to a personal vehicle may also be necessary;
  • Must hold Emergency First Aid (C) Certification (proof will be required at the time of interview);
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with colleagues, community members.
