A MESSAGE TO AMERICA Many Canadians, like myself, know Ameri- ca pretty well. We have traveled extensively there, and some of us who live in border towns, even spent a good part of our teenage years there. I am one of those people, and though my feelings about America are not as deep as an Americans’, they are still pretty strong. I look at America today and see little of the country | grew up hanging out in. | see a country that's been divided by economic opportunity, status, war, religion & political ideology. And these divisions are deep. The thing that America has lost, IMHO, is the sense that regardless of all the divisions, they are still Americans. one nation, indivisible etc But people have taken sides, and many no longer want to listen or dig deep enough into the other side to really give reconcilia- tion any chance. History has proven that this kind of deep division can either lead to violent civil war or a total break up of the country itself. Either way the country will be severely weakened and diminished As someone who has grown up close to America, | would hate to see this happen. The world needs more united countries and fewer divided ones, to face the challenges that lay before us. 1 know that a lot of Americans feel the same way, but to the rest of you, | encourage you to think long and hard about your country, what it really means to you, to your fellow Americans, and to the world. 7
