When life and work coalesce - acknowledging the full person

When life and work coalesce - acknowledging the full person

Although relatively new to this platform, already beBee impresses me. Not for any whiz-bang technical features or intriguing algorithms. Not because it has opened a door to a much more Continental experience nor due to the incredibly active, participation of it's CEO (that is though damn impressive!).

No. My considerable pleasure with beBee revolves around its embracing of affinity groups and the inherent recognition that we are full humans - we are neither simple creatures of function and business nor casual wanderers on the roads of living.

My wife presents a very compelling talk (really should be on TedTalks) addressing the myth of work-life balance. She contends, with my wholehearted endorsement, that we should be focussed on work-life integration.

How many times have you been asked, "Who are you?"

How many times have you answered, "I am a ______________________ (insert occupation here)."

That does not answer the question. If I want to know what you do to earn money, I will ask you. Something profound such as "What do you do to earn money?"

We are decidedly not what we do. At least not in totality.

As my wife Kate (www.wakeupkate.com) observes:

There's a growing divide between our purpose and the work we do.
Kate Kerr

For example, the work I do is brand consulting, reinvention and copywriting. So, yes, I am an marketing communications entrepreneur.

However, my purpose in life is to be a good man to my wife, my sons, my family, my friends, and my community.

This is reflected in my choice to operate two websites.

One, donkerrwrites.squarespace.com focuses on Don Kerr and his work with various clients.

The other, ridingshotgun.squarespace.com centres on my role as caregiver during our family's slog through the swampy lands of breast cancer.

beBee allows me to give voice to both aspects of my life in an integrated yet customized environment. The Hives permit me to self-select interests and people about whom I have curiosity and hope to engage in conversation.

I appreciate that and hope the leadership team at beBee can find the will to stay the course.

Gathering together a global community of people willing to converse is a worthy endeavor.

I did not really know you at the time, I don't think. Knew of you of course. Needles to say much water has flowed under the bridge and I have come to value your friendship and counsel as well as the other beezers,' very highly. Your assessment, even early on was right on the money.

Well said Don Kerr. Nail on head ! I feel we that on beBee we can ditch the agenda and build a real following. Conversations here seem so much more genuine.
